It took me two listens to get into the intro, but I like it. I think I'd prefer The Grants without it, but it's existence doesn't take away from the song imo.
 
The piano in the beginning is so stunning, as is the instrumentation throughout the song. And I love how clear her voice is. This one pierced right through to the heart for me, her tone when singing about doing it for the family line, and the verses about Phoenix and her grandmother...just wow

I hope this post doesn’t come off too hokey but I’ve been trying to put my finger on what makes The Grants so great to me. It’s taken me a few weeks of listening to it before today to figure it out. 
 
I had a lot of loss last year, death of a loved one, death of a pet, and the end of a really great relationship, all within 3 months. I really got deep into music in the months that followed, Lana, Taylor, and a few others. I found lots of songs that I could identify with, sing along to, shouting to the lyrics saying how I was feeling. While this was cathartic, I was often left with a feeling afterwards of “well what now?”
 
The Grants has all these same qualities for me, but in some way it gives me the answer to the “what now?” question. I take those memories of all that I have lost, along with me for the rest of my life, and move forward. 
 
Maybe the song just came out at the right time in my life, where I am ready to take the next step, but the lyrics tell me exactly what I needed to hear.

I know it’s another piano ballad, but it still sounds fresh to me. Like Ocean Blvd., the production is fairly minimal, but it’s also undeniably deliberate, with the fat trimmed. The song takes you by the hand as it builds from the unexpected vocal intro to the soaring finale. It’s subtle and refined and gorgeous.

Lolol miss lana really be taking all my money this release… like no thank you I do not need a whistle but I’m gonna buy it anyways 

There's something so beautiful about the way this song builds and how it really is such an ode to all of the people and things Lana loves. It's one of the most cathartic tracks I've heard from Lana to be honest. The strings and the harmonies are so emotionally poignant. This track is just one that hits for me, and it gets better with each listen. 

WHAT THE HELL is the vibe of the album at this point?????? Depressed christian hoe? whatever it is mother's taking us to church tonight
 

UGHHHH ITS SO BEAUTIFUL 

my fav part of the interview was when she said "i'm actually releasing a collection of my unreleased songs throughtout my career before i head to perform for festivals this year, i know a lot of my fans like them and sometimes i perform them too so i was like fuck it why not?"

Her vocals in some parts remind me of her older ballads, like Beautiful People, French Restaurant, Cherry Blossom etc. And the backing vocals are making me want this whole album on tour, performed front to back. An EXPERIENCE that would be.

I hadn't listened to any of the leaks, so this is the first time I'm hearing the song. 
 
It took three or four listens to REALLY click - but wow. Not only is this beautiful, but it's perfect as the opener for Ocean Blvd. Emotionally affecting, but not necessarily sad or tragic - she's acknowledging the pain she's been through and has been processing ("for my family line"), the juxtaposition of Chuck's baby and her grandma's passing. I know the Rocky Mountain High line has been interpreted elsewhere as referencing her uncle passing, but I also think it could be coupled with "It's a beautiful life - remember that, too, for me" - she often references other songs that she loves in her songs, and all of these songs are just one more beautiful thing she will take with her, along with the pain and glory. 
 
And I love, love, love the intro with her beautiful singers - it's such a warm, inviting, pleasing introduction to the album. And their voices are so beautiful. 
 
Ugh!!! I need March 24th to be here now!!
