wow, the personification of fame makes so much sense, i haven't analyzed the lyrics this way till now. the song got a whole other meaning with the music video fr

I think it does, especially that in the MV she's shown wearing pearls and diamonds necklaces, that she refers as "candy', diamonds and pearl represent the money, fame and stardom in particular during Monroe era. She doesn't care about that fame anymore it's futile to her, she's oppressed by it (White noise coming out of my brain) Just like in 13 beaches she personifies fame as a lover (Sittin' on the sofa, feelin' super suicidal Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible I do Feel like it's you, the one who's bringing me down Thought that we were cool and we were kickin' it like Tribe Called Quest You the best, but, baby, you've been bringing me down I can see it now ) What she was once obsessed with (BTD era, hence the hairstyle reference) is now something killing her.

Yes, it's not the only reference but a main inspiration I think, throughout the album, it's a retrospective on her carrer, this tunnel under ocean blvd. All the tracks discuss this internal dialogue. She's questioning what's important to her, should she continue down that road (fame and stardom) ? What's her legacy ? Does she need to concentrate on more important things ? (family, god)... Referencing old Hollywood stardom is not new to her but this time she's putting it into perspective (hence showing the BTS), it's not that glamorous to her anymore (that's why I'm not surprised by the MV as it pretty much reflects perfectly the themes she put out on the record.)

    I love her Instagram caption:

"Don't take the necklace...and if you already did - give it back..."

This was one of the most ambiguous songs in the album and now that she did a music video, the lyrics are much more clear. That's one of the reasons music videos add so much to the album and era, it's not just visuals.

To me “where do we go from here” is her letting go of the expectations that have been put on herself not only from the industry but from herself. Doing the things that make her truly happy and not sticking to the norm. The whole album has revolved around self reflection and self acceptance.. so the visual actual ties it up pretty perfectly

It’s kinda ironic, because her latest album has echoed her earlier work too with the samples and lyric references.. and then I’m the MV with the glamour and it’s gotten everyone really excited. “Yay we got old Hollywood glamour back” or “we got her old sound back”.. but have we? Is that what she’s trying to do? In a sense I think, despite loving those aesthetics, she was at her unhappiest in those early days.. and felt maybe she was putting on too much of a persona.. I.E. world building

who knows where she is going from here.. I suppose only time will tell

I was in public watching this n I almost teared up. This video’s like BBS’s older sister, and fishtail takes new meaning thru it too.

It’s an eerie, beautiful, but eerie video that just further makes me admire her artistry so much.

but also, for the women, marilyn, ms. Short and idk who else but. When u think about it, Lana had to really fight to become an artist that others took seriously. And I’m really proud of her and happy for her that she made this video strangely enough despite that one part.

Her artistry shines thru, despite all the stuff that the external world’d weathered around her. Wish she released the actual shots edited together, but it lends to the themes and also allure of the video and her artistry and her so I completely get it.

W/o the video I thought about how the song themes of landscapes, politics, unhealthy relationships from others but what I love about this video is that it highlights identity, dreams and avoiding pitfalls from those that couldn’t protect themselves in their times. Society can be freaky ya’ll.

Lana definitely doesn’t deserve this and I’m glad from a gods and monsters perspective, I’m sure this vid also sheds light on the unfair politics and egos from hollywood/ other possible unsavory sides of an environment etc.

i'm just so so glad about this video existence, this is the lana i fell in love with back in the day. like, the big hair? the glam???  god i love cinematic lana so much… i knew the midwest haven't killed her forever!! she was just asleep. you know, back when i first watched tropico i thought to myself "damn, if a chick puts that much effort in her visuals i have no choice but to stan forever". needless to say that i've been let down in the visual effort department in the recent years  but not this time! candy necklace was totally worth the wait and more than whatever i could imagine. i really hope it's not the last video for the era but if it is, i'm at peace with it. the bar is high again thank you everyone

The “bts” shots some of you keep talking about aren’t really “bts” at all.. they’re just apart of the music video.. you’re just looking at it incorrectly

Definitely this^^^ shes smiling at the end, everything is in color, shes in front of the her star. Its her ideal world, where art is appreciated and shes not seen just as this product of the industry to create an aesthetic. While i love every single look, i think it also represents how people expect her to look and act like a diva all the time. I got that Lana wants to feel glamorous and beautiful on her own terms, not society’s. Shes always referenced glamorous women who have deserved better in her art, but this film really added a layer of contemplation to the glamour and aesthetic of Lana Del Rey.

So I haven’t watched it yet.. just reading your comments.. but her whole thing of getting the star at the end just as Marilyn did for being abused by the industry

but Lana referenced all this Hollywood glamour in the beginning because she wanted to be that too.. she did make that comment “I wish I was dead already” and I’m sure she alluded somewhere that she saw herself having the same fate. But now she’s happy and realises she doesn’t have to play the part anymore. She don’t need no Damn star, I love her!
