You're 100% correct about "the weird entitlement/ownership" some people adopt in relation to artists and others. We know a great deal about LDR but there's a massive continent of information that we don't know and never will. So we can make generalized statements--guesses, really--about why she might have taken this or that action,  or more specific guesses based on specific things she's said or done publicly, but let's face, we're all a mystery to one another. Almost 60 years after her death, educated specialists in various fields are still trying to fathom the mind, life and actions of Marilyn Monroe. The same is true of Billie Holiday, James Dean, Sam Cooke, Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Jeff Buckley and still-living figures like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. 

 

It's okay to speculate, and fun, but everyone should keep in mind that few if any of us know LDR as a friend or acquaintance, which, if true, would probably give us a little more insight into who she is. But no one should be condemning or attempting to ostracize her, or destroy her career or back catalog. Humble yourself and realize all you don't know. 

 

Just yesterday an IG site played a clip of Lana and Jack in the studio, and the poster believed it proved the NFR! title track and 'Dark But Just A Game' were once the same song. Maybe it's true, I didn't see proof of that in the video presented. 

 

As Joni Mitchell said long ago in 'Sweet Bird'; change 'they' to 'we' or 'I.': 

 

No one knows

I see it as something that builds progressively with instruments and production and from WW onward we see newer textures in the sound come in. I don't know why I have this feeling that she'd speak a bit more about the issues with her mother - Dressing Down in Motown as something where she dressed as other women to make up for the shifty ladies in her early life idk 

Oh and I know she's never said much for Emily Dickinson but Wild Nights as inspiration would be something cool

someone explained it to me a few weeks ago but i don’t remember… i think it has something to do with the way they count sales or something like that (?) but either way both are kinda weak :stareney:

98k isnt weak for LDR for an album with minimal promo barring few interviews and 2 videos...

 

Katy sold at 50k

Dua at 66k.

 

LFL 108k

Norman sold 104k with the wildest promo and hype 

98k is GREAT for a slow  mood album like chem with 0 bangers.

Exactly. NFR had the tour bundle as well which counted for sales.

 

COCC didnt do as badly as people seem to think. 

 

Also I'm here for the more open vocals. NFR had alot of closed mouth singing. 

Her vocals shine on these new tracks. I was stunned by Summertime and YNWA too.

it kinda is tho. it’s sales are closer to 79k than 98k and both are well below her usual sales. the difference is her other albums have GREAT streams. cocc will never have a billion streams not even in 20 years. and streams do show that no one really cares for cocc but heavily cares for her other albums (she should take this as a clear indicator). 

katy isn’t really an argument either, she has been a massive flop for half a decade now and literally no one cares about her anymore. even honeymoon outsold smile’s first week sales like 3 times. :thumb:

the sales aren’t that tragic considering how messy and inexistent the era as a whole was and it’s genre yes, but they are still her lowest ever by far. and seeing how things are going the next sales will be twice as bad. we’re in the streaming age now, sales are unfortunately less important than streams and her recent streams are really really really bad. either way she has to come up with something quick cause this is just all around tragic, not just sales wise but era wise too. as i said before, lackluster music/eras and complete silence won’t keep her going forever….

Lana is established and iconic enough to not worry too much about streams and sales anymore. Her fan base is massive and she's going for a legacy long beyond her lifetime, not immediate success on the pop charts. She is going to be fine. I am so grateful that she cares way more about creating timeless art than keeping up with current trends.

 

People can complain all they want about her recent music being "boring" but quick reactions like that are irrelevant in the long run, Chemtrails and the three new singles we've gotten are beautiful art that will age very well and be regarded as important moments in her creative output.

Look at her LFL tour: massive crowds everywhere. I agree 100%.
