I think people are mainly saying this because the amount of work she seemed to put into TUOB and how ‘major’ the album seems (not uncommon to hear people say during the pre-release “I haven’t been this excited for an album from her since NFR”) .

I see it a bit as closure for all of her newer’ albums and to say it’s more similar to NFR vs. COCC vs BB is a bit pointless because it draws from all of them (for example, saying that the singer-songwriter songs are more similar to BB when LFL/NFR introduced them to her discography in the first place). This album’s an amalgamation of all of the sounds and themes of these albums (even some parts of LFL). I will point out though that it does literally end with an NFR song and samples NFR more than any of her other albums, i don’t blame people for some of their opinions on their similarities

I can definitely see it being a mood thing. This album is very emotionally heavy and slow for the majority of it. I also think this one of those albums where the songs are stronger together as one album than listened to individually. I’ve found myself listening to the album a lot, but mostly only going from start to finish. There are a good chunk of songs that aren’t usually my favorite style to listen to on their own, but I love them in the context of the album.

I also think that because it’s a more experimental and nuanced album, it’s less accessible, which means it’s probably not going to be as replayable or as easy/quick to listen to as a lot of her other music. If you’re not in the mood for it, it’s an hour and 18 minutes of heavy emotions and of pretty much the same dark, slow mood until the last 3 tracks or maybe until grandfather or LTLI.

This is kinda the same reason I can’t listen to the entirety of UV or HM a lot. I think they’re both masterpieces in their own way, but digesting them as a whole is a LOT. I need to be in a certain mood for them.

A&W being the first track of her Spotify "This is LDR" playlist... as it should

You are 100% valid in your opinion but I can guarantee you looking back on the pop icons of the 2010's and singer songwriters in general Lorde will not be as acclaimed as Lana

    1. NFR - In my opinion, her best. If you’re introducing her work to someone, this is the album for it. Can’t pick a favorite song, but the title track is a masterpiece.  11/10
    2. COTCC - I thought I’d have to take time to like this album, but nope! The album doesn’t drag at all, the songs are well written, the features are great! White Dress, Chemtrails over the Country Club, Wild at Heart, Dark But Just a Game, and Dance Till We Die are on constant replay. Honestly, it’s so close to taking the #1 spot.10.8/10
    3. BTD + Paradise - Putting these two together because they’re equal to each other. BTD was my introduction to Lana. Even though it holds some cute nostalgia for me, the songs alone still go HARD. The v i s u a l s we were fed this era! The lyrics didn’t age as bad to me as it did for other people, and some of my lesser favorite tracks (like the newer interpretation of Yayo) have grown on me so much over the years. I have no songs I dislike from this era. There’s a reason why this album is still charting.  10.2/10
    4. Honeymoon - Okay, so this album has grown on me SO much over the years. I see why people say it’s her most cohesive. Terrence Loves You, High by the Beach, God Knows I Tried, and The Blackest Day shouldn’t slap this hard, but they do. The production (minus the annoying trap beats on Freak) is beautiful. The demos for some of the songs off this album are great (maybe include them on a 10th anniversary edition?). And I have to say, I wish we got the production similar to Freak Like Me instead of the production we got in the end. That’s it. That’s the only flaw. The final version of Freak is keeping this album down at #4... plus the amount of time it took for me to love this album.  9.5/10
    5. UV - Her darkest album so far. Love the production. Related to it so much during this period of my life. Used to be my #1 until NFR came along. Must be personal growth, luv. The lyrics are great, but it’s peak LDR persona. I’ve outgrown Sad Girl, Money Power Glory, and Fucked My Way Up to the Top. Still, it has a special place in my heart. Ultraviolence, Shades of Cool, West Coast, Brooklyn Baby, Old Money, and Florida Kilos are my most favorite.  9/10
    6. LDR AKA LG - Such a cute underground debut. This album showcases how strong her songwriting was this early in her career. The only flaw for me is Put Me in a Movie. That song should’ve been kept in the drafts. Kill Kill, For K, Pt. 2, Jump, Pawn Shop Blues, and Yayo make up for it though.  8.5/10
    7. Sirens - Once I got my hands on a good quality version of this album, I haven’t stopped playing it. It’s a cute project that also showcases her songwriting skills. Next to Me, My Momma, Bad Disease, Peace (All You Need), Pretty Baby, and Junky Pride are my favorites. Only flaw: Birds of a Feather. Another track that should’ve been kept in the drafts.  7.8/10
    8. LFL - Bruh… this album… is complicated for me to rate. Look… it took forever to grow on me, but I blame it on how it was released. See, at first it felt like there was two separate albums in this project based on the first few playthroughs. Then I realized… Love, Lust for Life, and 13 Beaches are amazing songs, but all three sound like album openers from different projects. I love the early versions of Lust for Life as much as the final, but the Blade Runner version is my favorite. The “bitch” ad libs on Cherry are still cringe to me (sorry) so I listen to the “clean” version. White Mustang is cute (for an interlude). I still don’t know what Playboi Carti was doing on Summer Bummer, but it’s a cute song. Maybe it should’ve been a stand-alone single release? I love the Snakehips remix (sorry again). ASAP Rocky did better on Groupie Love than on SB. In My Feelings is cute… the lyrics are mid though. Coachella - Woodstock in my Mind is her worst released song. Period. Don’t even keep it in the drafts. Delete the file. Cut the cameras. Deadass. From God Bless America to Get Free, the album is brilliant. But again, maybe because it sounds more cohesive and I prefer the songwriting on the second half of the album. I won’t take away the hard work Lana put into this project during this era, but this could’ve easily been spilt into three different projects if you also include unreleased tracks that could’ve worked cohesively with parts of LFL (the people who’ve heard them are saying the unreleased songs from this era are great). Please, don’t come for me.  6.8/10

Now as for Blue Bannisters and DYKTTATUOB, I can’t rank them against the others since I’m still coming around to listening to a few songs. I liked the inclusion of unreleased songs on BB, even though they didn’t sound much different than the demos. I’ve been replaying the title track of BB a lot. Dealer is so hot. A&W is also hot, but in a maniacal way. Candy Necklace is emotionally devastating (just the way I like it). Let the Light In is a masterpiece. I’m still trying to figure out how to feel about Peppers.
So yeah, that’s my album ranking list so far.

It’s really amazing to me that I know several people IRL who never cared that much about Lana get totally converted by DYKTTATUOB. I’ve been listening to all of Lana’s other albums the past couple weeks and that’s really made it clear that her songwriting has really grown by leaps and bounds since she started (not that it was ever bad).

Just like the new songs on BB felt like a bridge to the songs on this record - I’m super interested to see where her songwriting goes next. I have a feeling this album was a real shift for her.

I love the Jon Batiste interlude. It’s like something you’d hear on Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. I find the Antonoff hate so tiring and I hope he and Lana do continue working together, but I’d absolutely love for her to keep working with Jon Batiste.

What’s interesting is that DYKTTATUOB sold more than NFR. I think this album really secured her legacy among stans and non-stans alike. I have a hunch this album will be very influential for younger musicians coming up, specifically in how the lyrics are written and the unconventional song structures.

Or maybe people just have different opinions? Why does everything have to be “you’re right and I’m wrong” on internet discussions these days? I’ve been a Lana fan since 2012 and Born to Die is probably literally one of my most played albums of all time. Yet, right now, Ocean Blvd is my favorite album of all time and I haven’t changed that #1 album for me since 2016. Just because Ocean Blvd doesn’t fit your tastes but it fits mine doesn’t mean you’re right and I’m wrong or vice versa. We have different opinions.

i’m sorry but i really don’t think this is the follow-up to nfr… in my opinion 1) they’re really different as this one is so much more inspired, experimental, it is miles ahead in terms of lyrical content and variety. i get that nfr is much more liked than chemtrails or blue banisters but 2) objectively this album is much more a continuation of blue banisters than of nfr. the reasons for this are the piano ballads which sound much more like blue banisters than nfr (vocally and production wise), the family themes, the introspection, the multiple references to her past, the somewhat political lines, the allusions to the critics, this is all reminiscent of blue banisters and not of nfr. honestly it doesn’t make sense to erase chemtrails and blue banisters just because they’re disliked when this record is in many ways a continuation of blue banisters and in no way a continuation of nfr, whether it be in terms of vocals, in terms of lyrics, in terms of production

For me, it's the way it immediately clicked that made it the "NFR successor" in my mind. I LOVE Chemtrails and some of BB, but it took me a few listens to get it. OB was immediate, the way I felt about NFR.

It's not something I can point to (lyrics or vocals or production or style), but something inherent and intangible that gilds the songs, and gives them that Lana magic.

I think this is an album written for herself and those who are truly invested in her story, like us, and it just so happens that the bops are undeniable and she's in a bigger light than she ever really has been before so all the casuals are giving a listen or two. We should be shocked THIS album is doing this well. A&W is an unmatched all timer from her, but the majority of this album has no business being as streamed as it is, especially Paris, Texas growing as an organic hit. The masses truly found some taste this year but we're just lucky we stan an artist who is still pushing herself and absolutely has more to give 9/10 albums in.

    I think the otherwise.

NFR and COCC have a connection. NFR first starts out as an ode to LA, but she feels burnout towards the end of the album (The Greatest). COCC is about leaving LA, escapism, going to ranch, finding comfort with friends and families (Dance Till We Die). Between two albums we had Looking for America (in terms of recording time), which connects the two album perfectly.

BB and OB have a connection: BB starts with theme she left at COCC, but then the theme is mostly "I'm this, don't change me" (Arcadia,BBS,Violets and Roses, Beautiful etc.). She explains why she is like this opening up things she had never before (Textbook, WFWF etc.). The album ends with her sister having a baby. Then OB adds to this, she starts with the family theme she left at BB and opens up more about why she is like this (Fingertips).
