Can people stop pretending that they're experts on Lana's upbringing? We don't really know much about her childhood, but we do know she had a heavy drinking problem very young and they sent her away to boarding school. Even if her parents had money, her relationship with them may have been bad enough that she didn't feel supported and felt a very real struggle for herself. I have no idea, and neither does anyone. She's not saying that they were homeless or starving, and I don't think she's lying but rather expressing her perception of that time. She feels like they had nothing, and instead of telling her she's wrong about her own life, maybe respect her own experiences. We also don't know the circumstances around why she was living in a trailer park. I've seen people say it was for fun or aesthetic which is just a ridiculous thing to say. Maybe her parents kicked her out and cut her off and she really was on her own with no option of financial security to fall back on. It's just wild to me how much people try to control Lana's own narrative of her life.

I also think Annie should have done her research and prepared well enough to be able to ask for everything between NFR and COCC. Imagine if Diane Sawyer was the interviewer. I mean, come on! All Annie did was give a heavy sigh in between, and that makes her what, super cool?

It's a double edged sword, Annie was also not being professional, if we go there.

Can you really blame the homegirl being defensive???

there's this thing that I've been reading about reactive abuse and it just gets me thinking about how things can be on the internet, especially w celebrities. I understand what she's trying to say past the dressings (yeah a little more in need of refinement, it's just this age it'd be wiser to).
she's always said she's been influenced by hip hop a branch of music pre-dominantly black from earlier on, worked w some (something of course that I'd think she takes seriously, quote how she fights labels).
she's just trying to say she's with us (LFL, notes from the forum, fan presents in the form of additional music, to a degree her poetry), supportive of social issues, but she has to do it in her own way, not because someone's dictating her on the internet.

it can be irksome having all these people figuratively breathe down your neck, saying how things should be done, it's like a normal person would say, "wtf, I'm doing what I can, you don't know me and what i've already done?" it just so happens that fame already accelerates that intensity by so-much-fold. how would you react if you were in that position? when ur intentions are good, doing things to support the causes that you believe in and fall in line w what people have been talking about her for (action). to have ur every move picked apart when you're already trying. back to society and trying to be a good citizen can already be so complex enough, I can understand how all that heat can cause her to only stick to her own set of values, especially w how things find her.

it's a kind of policing that doesn't mean much, but just cause chaos, and for what? brownie points? so u can do ur social justice roll call? I understand how important it is, very much, and to stick for what's right, and especially to defend the people that need help care and love. but doing so isn't just the jobs for those w platforms, it's also up to us as individuals.

you don't karate chop a drunk friend after a night out. you get them a blanket, you drive them home, you let them rest, get them some carbs etc. yeah you sass em a little for getting so fucked up, be a little proud of em but make it digestable thru honest checks, but lightheartedly. it takes a lot of care and love, and an unfortunate level of understanding that sometimes the other party doesn't deserve, but we do it anyway, bc we can't just keep divided. we're all human at the end of the day, and we need to respect that. lately all i've been witnessing is the karate chopping, and not sticking around to care for the person to make progress, or snapping back. with all relationships and interactions that you're going to flip back from, it's important to make sure that you leave a good impression, and that you're there for them to improve. if given the chance to, to do a job well, not just rushed and expect flowers the very next day.

we're all healing from different kinds of hurt, but the strong ones are usually the ones who understand, check the other side, and nurture them to a joint understanding and connection. so there's peace love and understanding between them both. you just get more hate with hate. we need to understand that love and following thru together is what we need as people, thru little gestures, acts, nurture. but we also need to learn to accept those and meet someone where they're at, so they can continue growing because everyone's gonna fail, but at least they're trying. and it's not fair, or maybe even right, but we have to at least try and move forward with them. or else nothing's gonna change.

before anyone tags me. I've gone thru so much in life already, even in my younger age. i've found safety in my life, only just a few years ago, what a family is, even just a lot more recently. and even then. sometimes it feels like a dream. I do what I can to see thru people and figure out what they really mean. statistically me being here? not good. I pushed thru w tears, not because I looked at myself first, and was honestly just confused af bc of personal circumstances i couldn't help before. but we have to push thru with love, that's what kept me going. trauma's only just gonna get worse w each blow.was it fair I ask myself? no. but there hopefully comes a point to when that threshhold of pain is over exceeded. and you decide. you can't be that person that goes into the statistic. you have to do better. for yourself. and to hopefully show others that it's at least possible. bc really, some don't even know that, and I think it's just the most horrible thing. example. thru example.

hope everyone does something for someone else today. not to get anything out of it, but because we need more of that in this world. not just thru the net. physically. I get her good intentions spiel because it really does do a lot. a nod, opening the door, a little conversation to ease awkwardness.what more, the more refined acts? doing something this cold world might not expect to the point of making it mythology. cold screens won't always do that.

This exactly! I like that she’s not all serious and poetic all the time and has those corny moments. They make her songs feel so much more real because none of us are profound all the time. The mix of deep and shallow lyrics is probably what makes her lyrics so appealing.

The entirety of Hope is a Dangerous Thing.

“You lose your way, just take my hand
    you’re lost at sea
then I’ll command your boat to me again
    Don’t look too far
Right where you are - that’s where I am
    I’m your man”
    - Mariners Apartment Complex
(I love the presence of these lyrics and the sailing imagery!)

    ”There’s no more chasing rainbows
And hoping for an end to them
    Their arches are illusions
    solid at first glance”
    - Get Free
(A very poignant and profound sentiment!)

“We both know that it’s not fashionable to love me
but you don’t go ‘cause truly there’s nobody for you but me”
    - Honeymoon
(It is stark but that’s the beauty of it - the dramatic in the simple is classic Lana).

    Anyone can start again
Not through love but through revenge
Through the fire, we're born again
Peace by vengeance brings the end

Norman Fucking Rockwell deserves all of the acclaim it gets - which I know is not an unpopular opinion outside of this site.

The album feels fresh and expansive for Lana without feeling disingenuous and it yields some of Lana's objectively best songs of her career; I'm particularly thinking of Mariners Apartment Complex, Venice Bitch, The Greatest, and Hope is a Dangerous Thing For a Woman Like Me to Have - But I Have it.

Of course, personal taste affects how you feel about the album, but you can't deny the presence, importance, and determination of the four songs I just listed. If you love this record with all your heart like me, then you probably can speak to the other 10 songs that, in my opinion, are also amazing!

It also feels like quintessential Lana and I think that's what makes it such good music; it's comforting because it's very much true to the LDR brand but it offers a perspective that is wistful and productive in a sense!

I also love the organic feel to the production - something about a good old piano gives the record a timeless quality, alongside some gorgeous guitars, strings, and the few heavier beats here and there. It has everything that is true to who Lana is, all while being cohesive.

I suppose it's fan favourite, so let me say Old Money is pretty boring to me. And I really like the underrated Guns and Roses, it's so relaxing and the bridge is beautiful ugh.

I mean, I can’t speak for the OP, but I really feel as though NFR’s best lyrical moments really showed a progression in depth, maturity, and nuance when compared to UV’s lyrical highlights.

I also feel that NFR (at least thematically and in terms of songwriting) was often just as risky and explorative. In NFR (the album), she describes sex with a frank flippancy, touches on her history of hard drug & alcohol use, reflects on the turmoil of the political environment, and addresses her mental health in both a poetic and sometimes graphic way.

In terms of raw vocal emotiveness and a similar production, Ultraviolence takes the cake, and that’s why I love them almost equally. However, I would argue that NFR not being controversial doesn’t detract from it being groundbreaking from a lyrical or thematic standpoint, but that’s just me

also, out of curiosity, is there any chance you had a link to where Lana described NFR as being safe from that aspect? I was trying to find the video but was struggling lol

edit: to clarify, there were aspects to the record I felt were “safe,” but lyrics and themes were—for the most part—not included

The surfy dreamy heaven that was in Patent Leather was just  I really need that production to keep up throughout the rest of the audiobook. A masterpiece before its even out , I cannot wait to sit through months of prerelease and no news for this after COCC's out

If you copy and paste a URL from the web you need to make sure the path ends in .gif and your text window should automatically embed the the GIF. If you find a hilarious gif but don’t have the direct link to it I’d recommend saving it to your computer and uploading it to an image hosting website that will give you a compatible URL
