Yes, Hitchcock is a sterling example. And The Birds still bites harder than most much more excessive films today.

Look at fashion and the art world. The latter doesn't exist anymore except as high finance and bourgeois acquisition, while the former has almost nothing to do with 99% of the population in the West.

That's one reason why shows like The New Look are important, to remind or educate people about the world that once was, and, contrary to so much education today, was certainly not all bad (by any means).

I've seen historical example after example of 'artists' being given free rein and then totally ruining their careers because, at that point in their lives, they still needed some tight reining in by producers or studios who were creative professionals and/or knew better.

A great historical example, if ultimately a minor one, is the Monkees, who were a studio-created band. After their first 15 months of global success, they demanded to write and release the songs they desired and take over the direction of their television series. As a result, they collapsed creatively, and the show was canceled. They attempted something of a comeback with the plotless, would-be-trippy movie Head, which they named after oral sex, and it and their last-gasp effort with a one-shot television special were total artistic and commercial failures. And that was the end.

He was actually pretty nice to me! On the very first day of filming the show, I was standing right behind him in one of the takes for the scene, and between takes he’d turn around and talk to me and the two others with me. I just remember telling him “you’re so TALL and your voice is so DEEP!” and he laughed as he towered over me lmao (I’m very short and he’s probably one of the tallest people I’ve ever met) but he was kind. I always take it as surprise when the lead actors choose to talk to me, because we’re not supposed to talk to them unless they speak to us first, but Trace really wanted to talk! He was really interesting and also interested in what I had to say as well. I ended up doing a lot of episodes with him and he would remember me and talk with me then too.
I do wonder if Lana is considering any well-known country artists as features for her record. A Trace collab would actually be quite interesting since their voices are sooo different. Inb4 they do a remix of Honky Tonk Badonkadonk xx

She's probably calling it "Lasso" just like she calls DYKTTATUOB "tunnel". The full name might be another 10 words or so, lol.

    The full title might be:

Did you know there was a cowgirl born to die but with lust for life living on the countryside with blue banisters around her ranch playing music to catch boys with a lasso during their honeymoon and they called her UltraViolet for it while Chemtrails clouded the sky over them?

    or whatever, lol

Besides it could be just a working title so they took the most country cliché word they could find, lol.

I agree; sharp, almost too clear.

Honestly, I think most creators strive for artistic vision today over pleasant listening experience, and that includes filmmakers too, which is why so much of today's art fails and fails to reach a sizable audience of any kind. Look back to the great Golden Age of Hollywood when films were routinely geared towards a general public, and yet masterpiece after masterpiece was produced, and the writers, actors, and directors were still allowed to put some of their signature creativity into their work.

I think Lana's rise and success--as well as the respect she's received from her peers in the industry--is due to her being a genuine artist with an authentic vision. Sometimes she creates middle-of-the-road songs like Tomorrow Never Came, Arcadia, or Margaret but the balance of her work is very visionary, like When the World Was at War, 13 Beaches, Gods & Monsters, Money Power Glory, Ultraviolence, Cola, Bel Air, Heroin, Swan Song, and Old Money among others.

It's difficult to hear those songs and then just walk away from Lana as an artist. No one else is doing what Lana is doing or 'world building' the way she is in terms of her vision.

I really think the Bazaar December 2023 photoshoot was a first glimpse into the aesthetic for this era. Kind of like the black and white beach photoshoot she did for W Mag before even announcing Ocean Blvd.

Also, the collage for the Hollywood Reporter interview had a little nugget too

Last minute she’ll say “Oopsies not September 2024, I meant September 2036” or not say anything at all

for some reason i wanna believe september is when it's out. that's still 8 months out, but she said she was just recording this week with jack so maybe they're doing some final touches and maybe some of these are leftovers from nfr till ocean blvd, since she said something about the last 4 years. hell, it could be like 16 tracks or something

I just know that so far I've loved every album by her, and that's not the case with any other artist for me. So I'm looking forward* to whatever she'll release, because I am pretty sure I'll love it, too. 😊

*... and this time I'm especially excited for this cause I love country and related genres. I suppose though, as some others wrote, it might indeed be more some kind of Americana, American standards, folk thing, which sounds just as fantastic. I feel like a child before Christmas. 😍

Wut? She did a bunch of country last year and where did she go wrong? I personally can’t stand most country, but I genuinely liked most of the country stuff she’s been doing.

It seemed really random at first, but I could sense that it was really important to her. Whether it’s a creative shift or just a new area she’s exploring, I support whatever motivates and inspires her.

Perhaps this is our do-over year…

2020 Leap year: literally had the most traumatic day of my entire life on leap day that still heavily affects me to this very day

2024 Leap year: literally anything else happens

2020 Trump vs Biden: Biden wins, Trump claims election fraud

2024 Trump vs Biden: neither bozo wins and are somehow both disqualified from even running

2020 Chiefs vs 49ers: Chiefs win, not sure the repercussions of this (sports are a nonevent in my world)

2024 Chiefs vs 49ers: 49ers win which makes Lana happy since she’s rooting for them (tbh idrc either way again sports are a nonevent in my world)

2020 Lana Del Rey unexpectedly announces her follow up record to her previous Grammy-nominated album to be released in September that has acountry influence & production by Jack Antonoff: Lana loses at the Grammys and then the new record gets pushed back & kinda flops

Country was definitely coming—next manifestation needs to be full on jazz. I’m here for the country album though. She never disappoints and always makes something her own so I know it will be very Lana lol.

thinking about the release date I think/hope we are good. She said they’ve been working on this for 4 years. So I would think most of it is done and maybe over the last few months has been wrapping it up. So in essence should be ready to press now or next couple of months for the September release. Fingers crossed.

I’m confused as to whether it will be a cover album or original songs??
I’m not excited about the fact that it’s country… it’s not a genre that I particularly care about but I’m confident that Jack and her turn anything into gold. So I’m sure it’ll be good, especially lyrically and vocally. I’m glad we are getting another album just over a year after Ocean Boulevard. How does she get so prolific with her heart and with that level of quality ? It’s so unheard of.

This is so exciting! She is so fucking prolific, honestly nobody can touch her. I get some people’s reservations about country but there are levels to each genre. It’s not like it’s going to be full blown cowgirl, I wouldn’t be opposed to that though lol. As others have said I see it being more Americana/singer songwriter style kind of like Mitski or Angel Olsen but with Lana’s own style and stamp. Henry already sounds amazing and Hey Baby Blue has always been a want of mine so I know she can do it.  Country really is a huge genre for North America so this could be really awesome. The fact that she has been working with Luke is very exciting too. He’s worked with a lot of really great country artists.  I love country but get it’s not for everyone. Either way we know she will have another album in a year or two so if it’s not your thing then you won’t have to wait too long for another one.

not some of y'all acting surprised at a country album... she's been hinting at this for a while now

i think it's going to be a more of country-tinged folk album than a full on country album but let's see...

and the title and the release date is giving white hot forever/rock candy sweet/july 1st/september 5th but well...

Country is one of the biggest genres in the US and Canada… She really could be adding lots of new fans if they feel the album is « authentic »
