no but really i think froot is just a genuinely interesting body of work, it has some really pretty instrumentation, some cool vocal filters, and smooth yet thoughtful lyrics, butterfly just feels really bland to me (a la love and fear)

I’m on my 3rd listen with headphones on and the melody is growing on me, love the pre-chorus but I just can’t stand the high-pitched voice  the problem is not even the voice itself, it’s more the rhythm of the chorus - like it doesn’t flow with the rest

I like it more than I was expecting to, definitely not going to be a favorite of mine or anything but good enough to give me hope for this era I suppose. Aside from the pitching on the vocals I do really like the almost-europop production on the chorus.

It's not just that though. Working with the same producer is the cherry on top. She was going to Melanie concerts recently, followed her on social media, and the whole Portals album is centered around rebirth with butterfly visuals and titles stylised in uppercase.
+ the snippet went viral with everyone comparing it to Portals on Twitter 

Wasn't a drag! I'm not saying she's ripping Melanie off, it's not bad to take inspiration from someone if she did. Just thought it was interesting

just the lyricism between then and now is what really does it for me. valley of the dolls for instance, so incredibly gorgeous! sex yeah, genuinely a little thought provoking, it’s progressive without being corny! 

 

the production too! those first three albums had so many little things in the background that i would regularly put on instrumentals to study to, but a lot of the instrumentals nowadays are kinda just really generic (besides ancient dreams which actually had some interesting choices!)  

i think what people love so much about EH (including me) is that it has alt / semi-profound lyrics with pretty much very mainstream (and consecuently palatable) production. Ur right, some songs hit different, but thats not something a basic pop album cant do either (Teenage Dream for example is a pop masterpiece, not really groundbreaking but songs like Firework and TOTGA hit hard even if they are “simple”). Electra Heart also has that mixed with more light-hearted songs like Bubblegum Bitch and Primadonna.

 

Im not dissin EH, i love that album… all im saying is that its very reflective of its time which is not a bad thing. The production now sounds a little dated, solething u cant say about Froot for example

Singing about people not knowing she's a butterfly...girl. There's just nothing interesting, believable or coherent about this perspective. She truly has nothing to make music about.

I don’t dislike it as much as the snippet tbh, lyrics are kinda boring and basic. I like the outro more than the intro & the chorus isn’t as bad as I thought, I think it’s catchy. I kinda like it, might need it to grow on me more. I hope her album sounds more like the outro

i don’t think anyone’s expecting her to repeat EH…. i just want her to be a good songwriter again LOL and honestly? i prefer orange trees 

 

Like personally? yeah i know she’s never ever gonna top the Magnum Opus that is Froot, but I have an obligation to check in on my good sis when she releases!

Oh i know! my point was mainly that although she’s still doing basic pop, i wouldn’t compare it to EH like you did 😭 Like EH and Love + Fear (and Butterfly) are both basic pop, but it’s like… Future Nostalgia VS Radical Optimism in terms of quality/uniqueness

I'm sure there are better songs on the album, but this isn't bad, the lyrics are just nothing new and the song is very L+F imo (not a horrible thing bc I think it gives handmade heaven and that's one of the best from L+F)
