"DEL REY: Right. I think that also, people are being a lot more careful with what they say. I remember my first big interview with Rolling Stone for Ultraviolence. He asked me about the song “Sad Girl.” Where it goes: [sings] “I’m a sad girl, I’m a sad girl, I’m a sad girl.” He said, “At 29, don’t you feel uncomfortable calling yourself a girl?” I was like, “You mean instead of?” And he said, “Well, a woman. I mean, you’re like 30.” I was really caught off guard because I wanted to talk about how I mixed my own album with this guy Robert Orton. Then, I said, “Well, what about that Jennifer Lopez song [‘Girls’] or the Beyoncé song ‘Girls Run the World’? I think she’s older than me.” And he was like, “That’s different. That’s a fun song.” I don’t feel like those kinds of questions get asked anymore. For me, it was trial by fire. It’s definitely a different era now."

i'm not a fan of it sonically but i think it's actually one of the best written songs on the album, on the verses at least.

One of her best songs - I always thought it was a retrospective of the narrative she relays on Yayo, in some ways. Several lyrical parallels indicate this to me -

Yayo: “Put me onto your black motorcycle”
Guns and Roses: “Motorcycle love divine”

Yayo: “50s baby doll dress for my I do”
Guns and Roses: “I wasn’t the marrying kind, I should’ve done it anyway”

Yayo: “It only takes two hours to Nevada”
Guns and Roses: “We should’ve left Las Vegas”

LOVE when she makes thematically continuous but subtle references between songs - it is so conducive to the “grand narrative” of LDR.

It's so so underrated, really dreamy and calming. I love her soft humming in the beginning, never understood the hate

Does anyone else hear "Dope and diamonds, that's all that I am" in the bridge?

In fact, if the official lyrics weren't transcribed on the last page, I'd be 100% sure that's what she says.

Meh, I hear "LA through New York, I'm gonna take them for all that they got."

When we first got the studio of Ultraviolence, someone thought it was "crying tears of gold like Lé Monét"

Amen to this. @@SitarHero I think you have the mistaken impression from my comment about "alleluia" being a "Greek-influenced form of the word" that it's obscure. Far from it. From attending Catholic masses with my wife I can tell you that an important part of the liturgy in every mass (except during Lent) is a call and response referred to as "the alleluia". And from my own very religious upbringing and years attending services at churches of various Protestant denominations I can say that "alleluia" is far more commonly used in worship music-- whether traditional hymns or contemporary praise hymns-- than "hallelujah". Now, whether Lana is aware "alleluia" has its own spelling and is not an alternate pronunciation of "hallelujah" is another question, but the word she is pronouncing is "alleluia".

I should also note that to anyone familiar with contemporary praise hymns it's obvious ~lyrically and sonically~ (especially on the chorus) that she's trying to evoke a mock praise hymn to herself. If the lyrics were changed to attribute the "power and glory" to God instead of Lana, this would not sound at all out of place at the church I most recently attended regularly.

Sorry, you're out of your depth on this one, heathen.

I used to go to church all the time and whenever we sang hymns, they were always alleluia - they use that version in spiritual songs - and MPG IS a spiritual song lol.
Alleluia is the version they usually use in music.

I think Lana just has a lot of fantasies of being fucked up female archetypes. I don't think she seriously wants to be a gold digger, but she probably thinks it's fun to think about and she's just indulging that in this song.

I only think the chorus is sarcastic, where she chants about money, power, and glory... The verses are quite thoughtful

Well, she glorifies money, power and glory in this song like others do it with religion.

I think this song is satirical, but also a very spiritual song with many allusions to heaven and God. The use of hallelujah/alleluia is a factor. Also, I think the "land that's far away" is heaven.

I think she's referring to the fact that her man is a religious man. Growing up catholic I often heard about things like "following God's call." So maybe she's saying that her man thinks freedom comes from following God.. Does that make sense?

    Where have you been?
    Where did you go?
Those summer nights seem long ago
And so is the girl you used to call
The queen of New York City

    A masterpiece

    i'm pretty sure it's dragon.
if this is a diss song, dragon would be her showing her power and dominance.
calling someone a whore could mean a literal whore or fame whore.

anyways, this is the song that made me realize Lana is queen.

Riviera can also refer to a bit of the mediterannean area that includes France (Côté d'Azur) and Italy.

A little something I noticed a while ago but never posted...

A possible explanation for the Riviera Girls thing

The Riviera (colloquially, "the Riv") is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. The resort has one long-running show: Crazy Girls, a topless show.

Didn't she say she met Dan A. at the Riviera club or something like that?

Also, "Need you baby, like I breathe you, baby
Need you baby, more, more, more, more
Need you baby, like I breathe you, baby
Fucking need you baby, more, more, more more"

She's being sarcastic/sardonic in response to this quote:
"I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: 'I’m nothing without you.' This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear"
