now its been years since I left New York
and i got a kid and two cats in the yard
the California sun and the movie stars
and I watch the skies getting light as I write
as I think about those years
and I whisper in your ear-
i’m always going to be right here
    no one is going anywhere

Exactly! I got interested in the Manson Family murders again just a while ago and the first time I read the lyrics the possible references got most of my attention, since I'm interested in these kind of home invasion/cult murder cases. Even with the references the lyrics aren't very clear though, so I interpret the story in multiple fictional ways.
    a) She's singing about her more or less recent personal loss, possibly an overdose, and as her world is fucked up and dark she dreams of heroin, possibly to escape the reality or even to reunite with whoever she has lost. "Manson's in the air and all my friends have come 'cause they still feel him here" is her being surrounded by people who might relate to Manson's agenda and look up to him in a way, since some people still consider themselves as members of the Family. She could be singing about how uncomfortable she feels around the people she's surrounded by and wants to escape their darkness as well. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sick of it." Or she could be dropping these references just for the sake of making the story more twisted and interesting.
    b) The lyrics take place in an alternative time frame in the late 60's, she's both in mourning and surrounded by people who are identifying themselves as members of the Family. She could be telling her story from within or without the Family, as she recognizes "these kids going crazy" and "writing in blood on my walls and shit" - the lines about dreaming heroin and "lying if I said I wasn't sick of it" could indicate that she's part of the Family, as a majority of them - if not all, I'm not 100% sure on this - used lots of (heavy) drugs. She's a member of the cult/commune, is sick of it and wants to escape the reality, in terms of doing heroin or possibly even an overdose so she'd be done with them for good and reunite with her loved one.
    c) Hell, if you let your imagination wander around it could even be reverse Roman Polański/Sharon Tate; she's lost her loved one because of the Manson Family ("writing in blood on my walls and shit") and she's wondering what led these kids into doing something so horrible and possibly some of her friends being part of it. "I put you on an aeroplane destined for a foreign land, I thought that you'd come back again to tell me everything's okay" is about her burying his loved one and dreaming he'd come back, but eventually she realizes he's not and therefore the dreaming of heroin, once again, is her either wanting to escape the reality or committing suicide.

The lyrics give a lot of room for one's imagination and point of view so basically there isn't wrong answers. Just because I pay a lot of attention to the Manson references, a majority probably doesn't or at least they don't take it as far as I do. And like I mentioned earlier, she could just be dropping those hints for the sake of making the lyrics more complex and interesting, possibly to draw some attention from those lines that really are personal to her and possibly about her personal experiences. If I remember correctly she said in one of the recent interviews that she doesn't do heroin but then replied "no comment!" when some fan asked her at the Spotify listening party last Thursday. The lyrics could really mean anything.

What’s the vibe? I pulled four cards.

A few things: I’m neutral on Swift, and I don’t have an agenda. Also, I’m not an expert on Tarot, so I invite other interpretations. Also, I’m pleasantly stoned.

    Seven of Wands reversed
Overwhelm, among other things, but I think especially so as this is a fire card and associated with the creative drive. Was she over pressured to contribute to a song? Maybe. Or maybe I’m biased. What does this card mean to you in this context?

    Six of Pentacles
Generosity, charity. Lana, despite her in/famous aloofness is being charitable to Swift with her talents (and the same some would say is true vice versa), but also Taylor is being generous as Lana will certainly see her coins.

    Wheel of Fortune
The sole appearance in this pull from the Major Arcana, this card is all about fate: this collaboration was inevitable, perhaps because of Swift’s frequent admiration of Lana, the Antonoff connection, the overlaps in fandom, etc. Also, this card is about cycles… Is there more to come from the two?

    Three of Wands
Our last card is about making plans for the future, fitting to follow the Wheel of Fortune. It’s also about growth, and calls back to the Seven of Wands, our first card, and the creative process.

i feel like a lot of people try and shift the blame of lana's new sound entirely onto jack as if he has some chokehold on her + controls everything about her music. jack really isn't a bad producer and his work with lorde and taylor swift proves that. lana has just as much (if not more) control over her music as jack does, and it's kind of incredible seeing the lengths some people here go to infantilize lana, like she's completely powerless.

Lol late reply, but notice how NFR-and-beyond stans never complain about her earlier work and don't criticize other fans for liking other albums more. You guys are constantly hating on her newer work, and I am yet to see a decent argument on that. Also, what's the problem with singing about "being a vagabond poet", and let me add, a vagabond poet in the middle of a culture and political crisis. What's so different from singing about being a bad girl with a love on the side who gets drunk and high? She sings about so many things. You guys just hate her lbr lol.
