to be fair I think there are quite a lot of songs on this album with strong melodies and quite traditional structures, but one thing i’m hoping for is that she won’t be mumbling so much on the next album. it works so well on A&W because of how nonchalant and disillusioned it is supposed to sound, much less on fishtail or peppers where i personally wish the vocals were clear. and i’d also love her to use her lower register more  but it’s still her magnum opus

thank you so much @Mer for helping me fully grasp what @Surf Noir said. now i understand that we couldn't have "did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean boulevard?" without lana, but we also couldn't have it without jon batiste, judah smith, jack antonoff, drew erickson, tommy genesis, father john misty, RIOPY, or SYML which were all a result of lana bringing them all together, which couldn't have happened if lana didn't know them in the first place, so we couldn't have it without every moment that led up to lana meeting all of these people and building up friendships with them, but what if lana didn't meet these people? what if they never existed? we wouldn't have the album without lana's parents, and everybody else's parents or grandparents, or great-grandparents, or great-great-grandparents, or great-great-great-grandparents, if you go back far enough, everybody's parents will lead back to the same woman, the mitochondrial eve, the woman we're likely all descendants from, we are all technically related to lana and all of her collaborators and friends to some level, we are all extensions of lana and this entirely unique group of collaborators, our distant ancestors who are more likely to be distant ancestors of lana and her friends contributed by simply having children, every moment in human history may have led up to the creation of "did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean boulevard?", but strangely enough, if our very distant ancestor did something slightly different, for example, give birth two days before, or live in a different location, we may have had a differently album entirely, but because our ancestors, and because lana and her friends did exactly what they did, we actually couldn't have "pearl watch me on ring a bell psycho lifeguard"

Actually, there’s neither nothing to be happy or about nor sad. For you see, @Surf Noir was saying that this album couldn't exist it without jon batiste, judah smith, jack antonoff, drew erickson, tommy genesis, father john misty, RIOPY, or SYML which were all a result of lana bringing them all together, which couldn't have happened if lana didn't know them in the first place, so we couldn't have it without every moment that led up to lana meeting all of these people and building up friendships with them, but what if lana didn't meet these people? what if they never existed? we wouldn't have the album without lana's parents, and everybody else's parents or grandparents, or great-grandparents, or great-great-grandparents, or great-great-great-grandparents, if you go back far enough, everybody's parents will lead back to the same woman, the mitochondrial eve, the woman we're likely alldescendants from, we are all technically related to lana and all of her collaborators and friends to some level, we are all extensions of lana and this entirely unique group of collaborators, our distant ancestors who are more likely to be distant ancestors of lana and her friends contributed by simply having children, every moment in human history may have led up to the creation of "did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean boulevard?", but strangely enough, if our very distant ancestor did something slightly different, for example, give birth two days before, or live in a different location, we may have had a differently album entirely, but because our ancestors, and because lana and her friends did exactly what they did, we actually couldn’t have "pearl watch me on ring a bell psycho lifeguard", and that’s not a judgement of happiness or sadness. That just is.

I saw many of you stan the Jimmy part, rightfully so, but I feel like it's THAT appreciable because of the entire song
The first part really sets a certain mood and all together the song is genius

I think a Jimmy kind of song would sound like a Lizzy demo that we'd like to have but not necessarily want as an official release

As much as I love this album, I do hope she goes for more of a classic song structure again / actual singing  I'm not sure I can take another album full of Fingertips...

i mean, this is the album that any stans have been craving for a long time, i don't understand what is it about some of these people who still aren't satisfied

It has the "piano ballad" and the personal / family lineage go-indepth story telling from BB
It has the soft breath of folk country - americana music of COCC
It has songs that don't follow regular pop song structure, which she literally sings the poetry à la Violet within the music by that "automatic/impromptu" technique.
It has the 70s surf rock influence, endless Californian summer from NFR
It has the extra, that glamour "pop" + "trap" sound from L4L
It has the heavy & cinematic piano, strings & violins that y'all fell in love in HM
It has the dark, the twisted, the sickness, the cruelty of it all from UV
It has the trip-hop, vintage hiphop, upbeat and catchy slutty sing-talk that we all obsessed since BTD
It even has the "surf noir" "metal glam" the "trailer park" feels with lo-fi electric guitar that resides within Lizzy Grant realm

Yet Ocean Blvd still sounds like itself - There's literally nothing to complain  You get to cry to it, get emotional to it, contemplate to it, smile to it, get heart-wringing to it, slut drop to it, twerk to it & praying in the church to it.

I personally find it very beautiful when Lana sings about her family. She's not just providing insight into her own world, she's also encouraging us to contemplate those people in our own lives. A lyric like "my grandmother's last smile" is so powerful because how can someone hear it without considering their own grandmother's last smile? "Charlie, stop smoking" doesn't just make me think of Lana's brother, it makes me think of the people I love who are smokers and wish they could cut back too. "Chucky was there for three out of three" makes me think about rushing back to my hometown for my dad's final days. I think people get a lot more out of her lyrics when they find ways to relate them back to their own lives. Lana is a magician and she's very much placing these thoughts in our head for reasons that go beyond her in my opinion, she's just doing it in the way that is most personal and meaningful to her.

The way our girl sings "I'm at the Roadrunner café" is simply in my top 3 she has ever done all music included

so true. I was so confused because they're always the first ones to cry for trap/beat/rock stuff and now that she put 4 songs like that production they still find a way to complain. full of essays talking about 'I listened to Lana since forever and I'm so disappointed she will never leave her yeehaw era'... l

A&W feels so carefully crafted, that song is insane!
I hope she experiments more with her next record and I hope she works with new producers, Drew Erickson is her weakest producer imo, next album produced by Mike Dean and Jack, idk who else would you suggest?

My most critical opinion at the moment is that neither interlude needed to be as long as they are especially the Judah Smith one
