i'm not surprised these fuckers didn't get it, misogyny at its peak and they give high scores to drake and justin who are the shittiest and most monotonous artists that can exist.

we'll go down to 81 again

well. But the fact that this album is struggling between being above 80 & below 79 is really a joke, when we ALL KNOW that by the end of the year or even of this decade - these fuckfaces are going to give her a few more thinkpieces about how her albums was "too ahead of the time" & "influencial" even when they trashed tf out of it when it came out.

The same B.S happened with BTD & NFR,only for them to include these babies in their year end lists / decade lists years later. No. It's about giving her the flowers in the moment when she's still here with us. Give her the recognition she deserves.

Scores dont matter & numbers dont entirely define Lana's art but hey, at the end of the day, if you want to give her a negative/mixed/polarised review - go ahead, but CONVINCE ME as a reader about what her  work lacks in academic & objective common-sense. I dont want to see some haters who's trying to take her down with their bitter biased personal feeling b.s.,not on my watch.

It's frustrating because the album deserves higher than an 81 or whatever it ends up with on MC because of biased critics who clearly don't like her volunteering to review her work. She was guaranteed a low score on their site out of the gate. And other positive reviews, like the 100 from Gigwise or the rave review from The Quietus don't even count.

In the long run, you're right, it really doesn't matter at all. It's more a frustration w/ sites like Sputnik having "merit" on MC when it's just a forum full of incel neckbeards who hate Lana (and seemingly most female artists).

One of the replies from another reviewer is "Brace yourselves, Twitter is coming", which just shows they're doing this for attention. It has nothing to do w/ the quality of the music. It just bugs me. If the site didn't count on aggregate sites I wouldn't care at all.

I don't think she believes that everything she does is genius or perfect, I think it's that she's just exploring her writing craft and seeing what comes out automatically, and she puts it on the record because she's into the idea of just "getting it all in one take", literally and metaphorically.

She said herself that she thinks Fingertips isn't a  good song (hard disagree) and that she's past the point of expressing, she's just writing. She has more of a spiritual impetus now and believes that she's not the sole auteur, that her work is more channeled from elsewhere and therefore needs to be just the way it is for some kind of karmic reason.

This album makes me so sad. I just had to stop at only track 3 because it's way too much.

People who prefer the pastor interlude over the jon batiste interlude… what happened to y’all as children? Is it the religious trauma that’s lowkey giving you stockholm syndrome or is it just bad taste?

I'm so happy to see how successful this album is

I think I said this before, but this just shows how important visuals are and with these gorgeous covers I imagine people are buying the album just because it looks pretty and they're curious about it

I mean, I've never bought a vinyl before and for this release I've bought every single variant, plus some cds and cassettes just because the covers are gorgeous

I imagine people who are walking through target, vinyl stores, maybe UO or anywhere else this album is sold might just be captivated by the cover and decide to buy it because it's so pretty...it also makes it more appealing to the GP when they see something so aesthetically pleasing pop up on the "New Releases" on streaming services too lol

she's not here to play, so glad she's breaking her own records and getting high numbers on streams, sales and critics. she really deserves it

I was mentally connecting her homage to Elizabeth Short with the part of Get Free where she sings about “I’m doin’ it for all of us” like Amy and Whitney and “all the birds of paradise who never got to fly” bc she could’ve died like them but didn’t.

i don't really know the context of this nor do i want to know but "she had slashes on her boobs" is crazy like  the girls and the gays really need to work on their scientific terminology if they want to be taken serious sheesh

this, and their biographies seem to have even more parallels, such as that Elizabeth Short also spent some time in Florida or that she worked as a waitress

Basically, Lana isn’t glamorizing Black Dahlia’s murder. She’s paying homage to her because they started out the same. Black Dahlia had dreams of becoming an actress while Lana had dreams of becoming a singer. Early in their career, they both didn’t have a stable home. Rather than Black Dahlia being known as the girl who was gruesomely murdered, Lana wants to show that she had this dream every since she was little of becoming a Hollywood star. Her comment also implies that what happened to Black Dahlia could’ve happened to her and other women as well, but it didn’t. Since it didn’t happen, she’s going to continue living out her dreams and creating her legacy.

I think in Lana's comment she's saying that she (or any woman really) could have ended up just like the Black Dahlia

Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) moved to Hollywood and was an aspiring actress, so I think Lana feels she relates to her in some ways. In fact, some of the rumors about Elizabeth Short said she was basically living on peoples couches, with no real home (much like Lana once did when she was a struggling musician)

There's a lot of parallels between them like that, the most obvious one being that both their names are Elizabeth lol

tbh that comment pisses me off so much cause i think one of the main reasons she deactivated her main was to escape the hate and have an account with only fans and love. i don’t want her to leave honeymoon cause people will start hating on that account too
whoops nvm it was on the lb account

i'm still scared about this because when i first heard it i was definitely like ummm what?? but after sitting with it for a while i think it could be a good addition to the album, i interpreted it as her affirming that she regrets the way she handled the situation and that she had good intentions. she's been subtly hinting at it/trying to explain herself for a while but i think it was important for her to address directly. there are so many ways people could interpret it wrong but hopefully people see it for what it was, anyways the general public didn't seem to care about the lines in text book which are arguably worse in my opinion so i think we'll be okay!

i mean, this is the album that any stans have been craving for a long time, i don't understand what is it about some of these people who still aren't satisfied

It has the "piano ballad" and the personal / family lineage go-indepth story telling from BB
It has the soft breath of folk country - americana music of COCC
It has songs that don't follow regular pop song structure, which she literally sings the poetry à la Violet within the music by that "automatic/impromptu" technique.
It has the 70s surf rock influence, endless Californian summer from NFR
It has the extra, that glamour "pop" + "trap" sound from L4L
It has the heavy & cinematic piano, strings & violins that y'all fell in love in HM
It has the dark, the twisted, the sickness, the cruelty of it all from UV
It has the trip-hop, vintage hiphop, upbeat and catchy slutty sing-talk that we all obsessed since BTD
It even has the "surf noir" "metal glam" the "trailer park" feels with lo-fi electric guitar that resides within Lizzy Grant realm

Yet Ocean Blvd still sounds like itself - There's literally nothing to complain  You get to cry to it, get emotional to it, contemplate to it, smile to it, get heart-wringing to it, slut drop to it, twerk to it & praying in the church to it.

    Here’s how I see it:
    - VB was part of NFR and on this album, the culture « died » with The Greatest. Which sorta mirrors the world we are living in. Before that, there was still hope and dreamy vibes to existence.
    - VB on Taco Truck feels like strolling on Venice Beach in 2023, in a non-dreamy, almost menacing world. the world has changed, we are now entering a new « stage », with more uncertainties.

Grateful for another day of no one trying to drag Lana for the "regretfully also a white woman" line
