31 likesSo I’ve been thinking this for a little while and quite honestly hesitated saying anything until tonight. Negating her previous records’ artistic success is, IMHO, blasphemy because her sonic direction, desires, and delivery (triple DD if you will ) represents who she is - perhaps who she was at the time. I really do believe her intrinsic identity embedded to her records is representative of what she went through, what she thought, what she felt, what she experienced at the time. And dismissing the production because of the simplicity and the instrumental purity of basic, melodic layering simply because the people can’t bop their b(p)ussies to it is, to me, ultimately sad. We seem to forget she has the ultimate say in her releases and, therefore, things sound the way they sound because she wanted it that way. Sure, she might challenge her producer(s) to do something outside of their customs or their conventions. But those projects were ultimately disseminated to the masses...under her direction. And I believe the same will be true of her upcoming albums - but it’s futile to dismiss the legitimacy and the value of her work because you can’t twerk to it. If that’s not your style move on...but I seem to somehow always find a way to relate to it. Perhaps because we’re ~somewhat~ similar in age. But I rest in the fact that her lyricism stays true to herself. I find a lot of calm in this. Excuse my rant...it’s not very often I express my buried thoughts.

20 likesOne of the many things I love about Lana is that she continuously tries to expand her horizon with what kind of music she can make. She creates worlds which each albums, a sort of escape And mike is a highly sought after and respected producer in hip hop that has an amazing ability with synths. and you can hear it in BB snippet, the heavy piano chords with prolonged notes that fade into synths a la bb demo , so its exiting to hear that she’s going for a new soundscape for a new world she’s creating reaaaalllly excited to see what happens

17 likesjust because her voice has changed and matured doesn't mean born to die has "aged like milk" if that's the case, you could say that about all of her past work, including sirens & aka, and every unreleased song from pre-fame, even the ultraviolence era because she doesn't sing like that anymore, artist's voices will change and mature during their career but it doesn't mean their past work has aged poorly...

17 likesMike said in his interview that the music he was talking about was for “this album” and not for “the next album”. Then he said that he and Lana hadn’t finished anything yet, but he plans on working with her a lot in the future. Yes he said they hadn’t completed “anything”, but I really don’t think he meant they literally haven’t completed even one song together. I think he means that he came onboard in the late stages of BB/RCS to do a few tracks or to make some tweaks, and after that they made plans to make one or more full albums together which have yet to be completed. I have a feeling Jack and/or Zach handled most of the production on BB/RCS, which would explain why Mike said he hadn’t completed anything since he views BB/RCS as mostly a project done by other producers. Mike was also smoking hella weed in that interview which probably made his wording a little unclear, and he seemed like he was being intentionally vague about Lana as if he has been told to keep hush. Mike is famous for completely reworking Yeezus in the final days before release. He might be doing that for BB/RCS, but Yeezus was a streaming only album which allowed Mike and Kanye to tweak it up until the last minute. Lana does big physical sales numbers but bad streaming numbers compared to Kanye. The only case that I see Lana putting out a streaming only album would be if this is a covers album, or her album of unreleased songs. But from the BB snippet and video clip, and from the way Lana talked about it addressing QFTC, it definitely seems like this will be an album of new and original songs with high production budget and MV’s, ie. the album will almost certainly get a physical release. There is a possibility that the album could be mostly unreleased old songs (Cherry Blossom), along with a handful of new songs (Blue Bannisters), in which case the album would likely be streaming only and could possibly be still incomplete and delayed. We learned from COCC that the vinyl printing process takes months. Lana missed her September release for COCC because she announced September like 6 months in advanced if I remember correctly, when the album was still a work in progress. Lana would not announce a release date for an incomplete album that is getting a physical release two months out when she knows that the vinyl printing alone would take more than two months. So in summary my opinion is that there is about 75% chance that BB/RCS is complete and is coming July 4th. If the album is incomplete and significantly delayed, then it is definitely a streaming only album and not a physical release. I really don’t think it is delulu to think the album is 100% complete and coming. I’m also still holding onto the slim possibility that RCS and BB are two separate albums that are both coming out this summer, but that actually does make me delulu

16 likesInstead of rehashing the same topic of Jack and Lana, let’s focus on something we can all agree on! And that’s the reality that if Lana did the same sort of sound every single album, we wouldn’t appreciate the records for what they are as their own. Yes, we would probably still like them and enjoy them, but Lana is a true artist because she can recount her experiences through so many different lenses and make it authentic. Born to Die is innovative, lyrically and sonically. Nobody has done it like her on that album. Paradise is a thoughtful and provocative extension of that album and is a soulful piece that only Lana Del Rey could create. Ultraviolence is full of fire, it’s raw, aggressive, but still cool and calm and collected. Honeymoon takes that even a step further with its subdued elegance and candid-but-abstract lyricism. Lust for Life is bright-eyed and brilliant in its narrative. Norman is casual and a soundtrack for daily life, it’s a look into Lana more intimately. And Chemtrails takes that to a more existential level as a moody meditation on fame. My point is - they’re all different. I love Jack and Lana’s sound but I think if they did three albums together in a row, I would of course love it, but what we love about Lana is how she can step into any genre and still make it her own. I’m sure that if Lana always made a “2.0” of her records, then people would take an issue with that. I’m also sure that Mike Dean is going to bring something fun and exciting to the table and help her reach whatever artistic vision she has this time around. It’s definitely going to be a change and that’s exciting! The uncertainty in that with room for something grand is exciting.

MARINA (and The Diamonds)
hashtagtylerh and 14 others liked a post in a topic by Elle
I just finished listening to the podcast! It was very interesting and insightful, especially for someone like me who has always been interested in fan culture particularly when it comes to music. (I mean hell - with owning an entire fan forum with 15,000+ members from all across the world that visit here for a variety of music artists - I sort of have to be, right?) I also think that Marina was the perfect artist to do this with, not only because she's interested in psychology and has taken courses in the past, but because the themes of what a lot of fan culture breaks down to are what she sings about in her music. For example, identity, a sense of belonging, humanity, fulfillment - these are all themes that were talked about in the podcast as reasonings for fan culture, and these are large themes that have been regularly seen in Marina's work. I also loved their little bit talking about live music and how that can be especially important to both the fans and the artist. I'm a concert junkie, and I see multiple shows from all of my favourite artists. It's not only that euphoric sense of being in the presence of live music solely because of the artist, but it's the community as well. Especially for someone like me who likes to queue for hours in line for a show, I've met so many incredible people from all different fandoms who I still keep in touch with. If anything, this podcast just made me crave live music again even more than I have been over the past year and being back in my little sanctuary - a concert venue. Anyway, incredible podcast. Definitely give it a listen if you're a fan of Marina, or a fan of anyone really. x -
