I didn’t find Question for the Culture to be controversial at all, I had read it as I would read any other announcement she has made and didn’t think too much about it. It wasn’t until I went online the next day and saw everybody attacking her that I was more aware of the culture she was referring to and I think the public’s reaction and them turning it into a race war just proved the point she was making. Her listing those women in the admiring way she did was to say “look at these women who sing about the same stuff that I do, but are seen as empowering figures in the feminist community, whereas I am seen as archaic in my beliefs that allegedly set women back hundreds of years.” I get that fans say they’re “traumatized” by her posting that because it’s never fun to watch someone you care about be berated by the masses, but I think that kind of indirectly trivializes the things that Lana was saying and contributes to the erasure of inclusivity of women in feminism and perpetuates the narrative that women need to adopt traditionally-masculine characteristics in order to be empowering (and by the way, I’m not saying women who adopt those characteristics are doing so on purpose just to fit a standard of feminism, there are so many more factors besides gender that play into why someone is the way they are). Why can’t women just be the way they are, even if that’s more “fragile” as Lana has identified herself to be, and still be empowering? I admire her ability to come out and say something like this - something that people may not be able to metabolize in times like these.

So, I don't want to be the tyrannical dictator some people think us Mods are, but this thread seems like in need of its own rules As discussed weeks (and months...) ago, misogyny will not be tolerated on LanaBoards. That goes from trying to apply the Golden Rule to her ears to assuming she doesn't know who she is when she's single (which is outdated to think as she literally just released a poem about knowing who she is after getting out of toxic relationships). Mental health is a serious topic and I'm sure many members from here do suffer from disorders/issues, just like most of the world population (I myself suffered from eating disorders all my life), so I don't think implying Lana is either bipolar or borderline or whatever and then saying she shouldn't have children because of this is nice by any means, and it's also triggering for those struggling with these diseases. The member who said this got a WP. Please be careful and tactful with your posts!

Sometimes when we’ve felt low for so long we overcompensate for what we lacked before and then we may think the next extreme is the right way to be but later find that we went too far and are still missing a few things. I think it possibly could come from having felt like a “loser” in the industry for so long, which shows in her recent rants and (I know the grammy loss hurt her) She went from sad and insecure to (possibly) arrogant and pompous. Possibly went to the opposite extreme. I hope she will find a balance soon If this is the case. If not, like you’ve mentioned, it could just be for publicity and they want to make eachother look good. They might not realize they went overboard haha and Jack probs feels bad for Lana because shes had such shit criticism lately, he might’ve wanted to give her a sense of leverage or something

"witchy" has basically become a meme at this point on lb, but i'll try to answer this to the best of my ability. it's funny, because now that i think about it, i don't really know what lana songs are truly "witchy". a while back, and i'm talking 2017 / 2018 i would of considered cherry to be "witchy", and now i don't really at all, there's nothing about the song that constitutes it being "witchy". another example could be serene queen since i think the lfl era in general is associated with the "witchy" aesthetics, such as the album trailer, but to me, serene queen is not really "witchy", when i listen to it, i feel like i'm hula hooping with a ring of blue fire in a desert. another track that i feel like is commonly associated with the fabled "witchy" aesthetic is the first lfl demo, but to me, that song is more "spacey" than anything. i feel like perhaps the most "witchy" song in lana's discography is probably "season of the witch". to me, a song that is "witchy" would have some eerie, almost halloween like elements to it, to stretch this even further, the song may not necessarily have a "witchy" sound, but may contain lyricism and imagery that is "witchy", and i think a good example of that could be raise me up, with lyrics such as "it's the voodoo mississippi south, sixty nine million stars, birds are flying out of my mouth, spirits creeping in my yard". i didn't mean to write an entire essay but, hopefully this helps answer your question.

ok but can we talk about how Venice Bitch is my most played song by her and I've been tracking my listens from her since 2014? I posted this on the lana subreddit a while ago but might as well post it here (really extra ik but I just ADORE this song so much (and I also may have candy flipped to it multiple times and have had the most amazing experience with it): After the release of Mariners Apartment Complex, I remember thinking nothing could top NFR’s lead single, but honestly I was blown away the first time I heard Venice Bitch. It’s honestly such an amazing song. I’ve been a Lana fan for so long now (probably around 7 years) and no song has haunted me as much as Venice Bitch has. It’s so somber and hypnotic yet full of love and longing. It reminds me of summer sunsets at the boardwalk but also springtime breezes at the park. The music video even gives me chills even if it’s essentially a loop: from her singing and having fun with her friends, the streets of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, the ending with her just crouching down with lights flashing on her. These past two years I would just listen to Venice Bitch whenever I was sad, happy, anxious, or wanting to create new memories. It’s my most listened to Lana song of all time. While the song is almost 10 minutes it only feels like 5, and the ending lines “if you weren’t mine I’d be jealous of your love” will always haunt me and make the wait worth it. The psychedelic synths and guitars and the voice overs really make this song, as well as the angelic chorus and slowcore verses. I really hope there’s people out there that enjoy and relish this song, I think it’ll be one of my favorites for life. The fact that I’m growing older with this song is just the cherry on top of the cake. I really hope she can do something like this in COTCC. (and then I replied to a comment with: [we're getting high now, because we're older] and "as the summer fades away, nothing gold can stay" is so heavy for me, especially since it feels like time has been flying and the world has changed so much ever since the song was released. The fact that she basically samples 1960s/70s lines ("you're in the yard, I light the fire" and the "crimson and clover, over and over"), paired with the vintage music video footage, I feel really connected with both the past, present, and future. It's such an extraordinary and almost spiritual feeling for me.)

I’d love to pick up a copy but I’ve called around to a few places in Pittsburgh and literally no one seems to have it. Ordering it from the site is an option but I really don’t feel like paying 20 dollars for a magazine. (I know it’s no 40 dollar shipping or anything stupid like that but still).

Respectfully disagree; I don't feel like that's the reason for how she comes across in this article, but we can only speculate. It's difficult to gauge because as several people have said, interviews in which artists interview other artists tend to turn into bootlicking. Like, in much of it, she's talking herself up whilst simultaneously talking up Jack (eg: "we always know everything").

you're welcome! and thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about lana's artistry and how it's perceived by the listener! i would agree that it's definitely subjective, a lot of factors play into how different people perceive, interpret, and enjoy music. i've heard some people describe "maha maha" as witchy, and i can understand why, because of the supernatual, other-worldy imagery, despite being more colorful and upbeat in it's instrumentation.

Lana received a lot of shit for that "Culture" letter because she basically made it seem that all those black women she named weren't fragile like her because they are black. That's why the black community was pissed. There's a negative stereotype that black women are loudmouth and rough and Lana going on and on about "fragile like me" made it worst. Then she added another black woman into her list ( FKA Twigs) and whined about Twig's pole dancing being referred to as art by the public but when Lana does it she's called a whore. What FKA Twigs does on the pole IS art, what Lana did was nothing but typical boring stripper pole moves. Lana was wrong and should have apologized. Instead she doubled down and made it worse. Lana has/had a lot of black fans. Months later they are still pissed. They sure as hell don't look at that letter she typed as admiration. The thousands of videos lambasting Lana on Youtube about what she said is evidence that people weren't having it. If you still don't get it, ask a black person to explain it to you. I wonder how this might affect her new album sales.

can someone please tell me a few solid examples from the interview that makes lana seem like she has a huge ego and "something crawled up her ass and died" ??? I just read the interview from top to bottom and i cant see anything that makes her seem bad or ego inflamed ...?

Hope “Dealer” is not another “Yosemite”… I swear she loves torturing her fans with these delays for every project, no clarifications and songs she hypes but then never releases… Interesting interview, but kinda vague. She and Jack know EVERYTHING that’s going on, about what??? Loved what she said about her melodies, she’s definitely a master when it comes to crafting them.
