“So, Blue Banisters was more of an explanatory album, more of a defensive album, which is why I didn’t promote it, period, at all. I didn’t want anyone to listen to it." PLEASE

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m feeling the sort of lightness and realization that I felt in summer 2019 leading up to NFR’s release. Things feel really good and normal again for the first time in 3 years, and especially ahead of this album’s release - I feel like that’s got to be a good sign. And not just for the record, but for everything in general.

You know, I think we’re really going to miss this prerelease era. Having the album to ourselves will be magical and eternal but I’ll miss these moments of getting together with dozens of fans to celebrate a living legend. What a special era. I’m so happy.

2 singles, 4 magazine covers, an album photoshoot with merch, festival dates…what else should she be doing 😭😭😭

despite the lack of music video she's released two singles, went to an award show, put up that petty billboard in tulsa, got featured in at least three magazines AND has a tour incoming. she's promoting it HARD

Imagine the collapse if it really was a surprise drop on the 10th LOL the compromise they agreed to so she could finally have her surprise release It would actually be an interesting approach: announce a release date and get everyone to pre-order, then push the release date to drive everyone insane, then surprise drop on the original release date. Lana always changing the game

easily the best interview we've gotten from her in a while, the perfect balance of talking about her current cultural reappraisal and impact and also the fact that she has a new album coming. comprehensive, shows us her as a person and an artist. prob "the big interview" of this era, like mojo for cotcc and billboard for nfr

I love interviews like this where when you’re reading it, it seems like you’re a fly on the wall listening in on a conversation between two friends - or maybe even joining them in a third chair placed around in a triangle. Amazing read - great questions asked by Hannah, and insightful responses given by Lana. I always love learning more about her personally with what she shares with us through lyrics, poetry, and interviews - even 11 years later, I’m still as interested as I was the very first day. She’s both enigmatic and pellucid at the same time. Love her x

AOTY incoming. Her frame of mind, the reception, the print visuals, the music, is so perfect this era, everything is aligning for another career-defining moment. I adore what Jack had to say about her in the RS interview. He recognizes the immense talent he’s working with and the impact that she’s made outside of and before their collaborations. I’ve had issues with some of Jack’s production choices but don’t feel hate towards him, because when they get it right it’s so fucking right. 16 days

I’m a longtime lurker who rarely posts but I just have to say I really loved this interview. It feels like the best interview that we’ve gotten in years. She really does seem more at peace and happier. I love her so much. That interview just felt like I was talking with a girlfriend. I love her recollections about life and love. So excited for the new album.

Super thrilled to read a REAL interview with her, not some Q&A with a fellow artist. This was very enlightening.

Jack Antonoff: "You have a weird whiplash of not knowing what you’re supposed to feel (on A&W) That sensation is across the album: you could dissect the tone of whether it’s hints of gospel or bringing back some of the 808s and the fucked-up side of things. But in the studio, it was just about finding what is shocking in the moment. Lana is boundaryless. She’s reached a point in her work, which is really my favourite place to work from, where there’s nowhere to go but way out into the fucking wilderness artistically. Go chase radio? That’d be so stupid. Go chase trends? So stupid. She created all the trends. It’s a freeing place, if you can accept it. The only place to go is to be a leader." This album is going to be frighteningly good

There’s a playfulness, freedom and an honesty about her immediate reality on her new album, Did You know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. Tracks flow in a jazzlike trance; classic piano and acoustic songs blend into hip-hop, pop, gospel and choral numbers. Colloquial lyrics move as fast as a Beat writer’s poem: they seamlessly speak to a friend about culture, offer mundane updates on what’s going on in her daily life, present notes on dark relationships. But songs frequently, as Antonoff notes, come together with a “voice of God, some joy or hopefulness”. ALBUM OF THE CENTURY

ROSEMEAD 1. A&W 2. Let The Light In 3. The Grants 4. Taco Truck x VB 5. Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing 6. Fishtail 7. Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd 8. Kintsugi 9. Candy Necklace 10. Sweet 11. Margaret 12. Peppers 13. Paris, Texas 14. Fingertips (15. & 16. Judah Smith and Jon Batiste Interludes) Not a fan of the interludes, Fingertips, Paris, Texas, Peppers, and Margaret, but praised the rest of the tracks and literally said that Kintsugi and Candy Necklace being in the middle of his ranking order doesn't mean anything at all, because he adores both songs and we have nothing to worry about in terms of their quality. He also really likes Sweet which he called "cute next to gorgeous". FLORIDAKILOS 1. Fishtail 2. Taco Truck x VB 3. A&W 4. Fingertips 5. Paris, Texas Not a fan of the interludes and Margaret (because of Jack's voice, lmao). BRIGHTSUN 1. Kintsugi 2. Let The Light In 3. Margaret 4. Taco Truck x VB They consider this to be Lana's best album. Not a fan of Paris, Texas! KINTSUGI (no official ranking) 1. Kintsugi (duh) + highlighted A&W, called Candy Necklace massive, thought Margaret is actually great, called Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing excellent, praised Let The Light In and Taco Truck x VB's outro ("one for the books"), and generally raved about the tracks 8-16 sequence. The only tracks that he didn't like are the two interludes. BOZ (no official ranking; an ATRL member tried to guess/predict BOZ's ranking order, and BOZ said that it's pretty close) 1. Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing 2. A&W Also praised The Grants, Let The Light In, Paris, Texas, and Fingertips. He really likes the Jon Batiste Interlude and has kinda warmed up to the Judah Smith Interlude (which he called eerie and psychotic). He also said that Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd is possibly a top 5 track on his ranking order. Not a fan of Margaret (he called the song "cute", but he doesn't like Jack's voice at all in general) and Kintsugi (he praised the lyrics, but found the track way too slow for his liking). The rankings are all over the map, and this is the sign of a great album! I love the fact that Margaret is at the bottom of BOZ's ranking (and Rosemead doesn't like it either), while Kintsugi said that it's great and it's also made Brightsun's top 3. Ditto Paris, Texas (very high on BOZ and Floridakilos' ranking, very low on Rosemead and Brightsun's ranking) and even Kintsugi (#1 (!!!!) song for both Kintsugi and Brightsun, near the bottom of the ranking order for BOZ) and Fingertips (Rosemead's least liked song, while praised by BOZ and floridakilos). It really looks like there's something for everyone. The only tracks that haven't appeared on top 5s etc. seem to be Peppers, Sweet and the two interludes. I haven't listened to any of the leaks/snippets, but I adore all of your wildly diverse reactions to the tracks so far. I am so excited about the new album! And based on floridakilos' tea regarding the fact that most insiders/leakers don't have Candy Necklace, this is definitely Black Bathing Suit redux (last-minute addition to the tracklist + similar spot on the tracklist (track 6 v. track 5! right after an interlude!) + similar length (5:14 v. 5:18)! lol).

She’s promoting a lot, actually — by her standards, of course. Major magazines + insightful interviews, online visibility, a whole public appearance and winning an award 💀 and there are more magazines and probably radio interviews coming in the next month. Not to mention, live shows for the first time in 3 and a half years - which is traditionally the way artists “promote” their records anyway, and has been since the dawn of music. So I think we’re having a pretty eventful time here as Lipsters lol.

I went to Paris (Texas) With a suitcase in my hand I had to leave Knew they wouldn’t understand When you know, you know When you know, you know It’s time, it’s time to go When you know, you know Then the more you know It’s time to go I took a train to Spain Just a notebook in my hand And I went to see some friends of mine Down in Florence, Alabama When you know, you know When you know, you know It’s time, it’s time to go When you know, you know That it’s time to leave Like the summer breeze When everyone’s star is bright Brighter than you are It’s time to go And you’re the only one left Dancing while they’re on the floor Time to go I flew back home It seems everything’s the same (Venice, California) Except that you weren’t home Hello, I called to know why (but) When you’re home, you’re home (Venice, California) When you’re home, you’re home (Venice, California) You’re home when you’re alone When you’re right, you’re right When you’re right, you’re right Even when you’re wrong

also, I don’t think I ever knew until reading this article that they changed born to die to be poppier right before release. I wish I could hear it in its original version that she first intended. it is annoying, like she said, that because of that switch by the label, it changed her public perception to be a pop artist with a manufactured persona versus a diaristic singer-songwriter with a pen name.

I interpreted this as, she was enthusiastic making the music for herself, but the idea of creating an album, promoting it and releasing it as a commercial product for people to critique made her unenthusiastic because she didn’t want a repeat of the slander of 2012. I think she’s carefree now. Maybe it took releasing Blue Banisters, an album she wanted no one to hear, to get things off her chest and come back stronger
