31 likesA week before release, we’re brought into a record label office basement to listen to Lana Del Rey's new album to review. There are drinks and snacks; the crunchy kind, to be chomped on during the masterpiece. We settle in, someone hits play and the tinny speakers deliver the album without much more fanfare or care than you would playing it for the millionth time through your cheap in-ear headphones. People go to the toilet missing entire tracks, twiddle thumbs, scribble notes. We listen once, and leave to give it a rating and comment on its merit. We’re the critics, and when Lana sings “I know you hate me” on the final track, it feels pointed. But it’s a wonder that she doesn’t hate us more." this self sabotage... this is the type of shit ben and ed shouldn't allow to happen as managers

27 likesThat part of the Gigwise review that said some reviewers missed out entire tracks while going to the bathroom tells me everything we need to know about the integrity of music criticism. This isn’t an album that is easily digestible or catered to today’s frantic attention spans. It asks for time and open mindedness - which makes it the more rewarding the more time you spend with it. It’s also kind of boring to see so many users still acting like music is divided in either beat-driven bangers or boring piano ballads and nothing else in between. A track like Grandfather is nothing alike Sweet or Paris Texas (for instance), they represent different things, go for different sonic soundscapes and even have Lana delivering different vocal performances. It can be a different frustrating to see people reducing this album to this or that when chances are it’s far richer than whatever box you’re trying to put it in. Give it time to sink in and wash over you. There’s an entire universe in this record and it’s a fascinating one, whether it entirely works for you or not.

24 likesFor the first time in my life… it’s a hard pass for me. Love her with all of my heart, I’d take a couple of standalone tracks after Ocean Blvd, maybe the cover album sometime in 2024, but hell nah for LDR10 this year. This thread is proof it shouldn’t happen for everyone’s sanity. We can’t control ourselves when it comes to her and anxiety is making everyone fucking insane.

24 likesI’m so glad she isn’t sacrificing anything for critical acclaim. NFR’s one of my fav albums but it’s hands down her safest album too. It’s very easy for critics to love. Ocean Blvd is more daring and unconventional with moments like the second part of A&W, Fingertips and Peppers that lead to split opinions. It’s way more interesting to me. I love when she experiments and doesn’t keep it safe lyrically and sonically, but that’ll always be hit or miss with critics.

23 likesThe reactions to the leak in this forum is giving me major deja vu to when NFR! first leaked. There was a similar vibe in that it was so soft rock compared to her previous releases, and then a bit of spicy divisiveness over which tracks were the best, and a lot of statements on which songs should be removed. I take this as a positive, since it's proving the album isn't boring, and I think pared with the reviews (which have been generally positive), that the album is going to be a grower and eventually reach the reputation NFR! has. Do I think the critics will put it as high as that one? Probably not, it seems more introspective and without an overall commentary that they tend to eat up (it was years ago, but my receipts are here somewhere in early 2019, I predicted it's acclaim based on the singles almost a year in advance.) In general, the way critics are comparing it to Leonard Cohen, and the fans have been kind of scratching their heads and praising the lyrics in equal measure - this feels like one of those mid-career releases that singer-songwriters do that doesn't become a "best of all time" thing, but that generally most agree is a strong statement and personal denouement that only a great can convince a major label to release. This is about all I have to say, at the moment. I'm excited for the record based on the reaction. NFR! ended up being way better than I ever expected it to be, so y'all responding to it the way you are makes me think there's something special and unique to take in - which is nice after the laidback and predictable (not in a bad way) period of COCC and BB.

23 likesi’m just a tad confused with some of y’all who have stated (multiple times) your dislike for the record. which is fine, everyone has their own opinion and taste level. but my question is why tf are you in this forum still if you’re not a fan of the new music? all you’re doing is bringing the vibe down and making it more of a miserable experience. we get it, you’ve told us you don’t like it…move on and give us, who do love the new music, the space to celebrate it. thank you

21 likesthe way some people act about the reviews make it seem like she’s at 30 on metacritic yeah I wanted her to have the NFR acclaim too but this album isn’t accessible to casual listeners enough besides in a few eras it won’t even matter and this album will be remembered as one of the beloved ones by fans just like ultraviolence.

20 likesidk why you're acting all surprised, it was obvious from the start this album wouldn't get 10/10 reviews since it's too diverse for the reviewers - it's not a too digestible album and this is EXACTLY why it's one of her best the truth is that top rated albums are consistent and sometimes just safe, critics don't want to think and interpret too much cause they're often too stupid for that lmfao

19 likesIn my opinion, I can see why this album could be 7/10 or 8/10 for some people. Is it because the album is not good? No, it's actually the opposite. The album is great, but it's different. It took elements from her past albums, such as eerie vibes, melancholic and rich production, beautiful vocals and confessional and wordy lyrics. It's the perfect middle ground between raw but polished. Something that, again in my opinion, Blue Banisters failed to. This album is not easily accessible for those who don't go in with an open mind. Those who think know who Lana is, realize they don't actually know after the first few songs. She is not your average manufactured popstar, she's a human being who also happens to be an artist. She's fragile, clumsy, honest... She talks about her personal life in a way she hasn't before. She doesn't need metaphors to hide the truth; this time the truth is just revealed as it is. Her past is dark, her experiences were traumatic, but her future seems to be brighter. Or at least, that's what she hopes for. She's not making music exclusively for the critics, nor for the fans. The music is for herself. It might allow her to heal, to move on from her trauma. Even if you listen to the more upbeat songs, they're not your average "bops", they also hold some truth in them. The album is deep and heavy. Some of the lyrics are hard to analyze without getting a headache. Some are about love or heartbreak, some about family and friends... but they're different. They're about HER experiences in that field, not a song you could easily relate to unlike many others songs about the same topic. That is, of course, unless you've been through similar experiences. It takes more than one listen to fully understand what's going on. Like I said, if you don't go with an open mind, you might not enjoy it. And that's fine. Maybe the album is not for you, maybe the "new Lana" is not for you. I understand we all have different opinions, but to say something is bad when you haven't given it a second chance is... rather disappointing.

19 likesliterally every time you don't agree with something Lana does, even something as simple as her choices for singles or leaving a comment on instagram you bring up how her managers are the problem for "letting" her do it. as if they have/deserve this sort of power over her anyway... she is a grown adult woman with autonomy and thank God for that. no one owns her and no one ever will or should. these comments are getting borderline creepy and misogynistic, please check yourself for once thx.

18 likesJust for comparison: DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE'S A TUNNEL UNDER OCEAN BLVD Best New Track: "A&W" Pre-release singles added to Pitchfork Selects: "A&W", "Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd", "The Grants" (3/3) There's a...very interesting pattern here, but I don't want to get my hopes up. Anyway, the fact that A&W was named BNT while all three (!) singles made the Pitchfork Selects playlist is an encouraging and promising sign. I think that the album will get a 8.0+ score. Hopefully it'll be named BNM as well.
