Bonjour hoes So, a while back I actually bought access to that Mix with the Masters website. Both Kieron Menzies and Jack Antonoff had videos about Lana, in Kieron's case about High By The Beach and for Jack it was about Mariners Apartment Complex and The Greatest. I decided to write down some of the more interesting stuff they said about Lana, since I haven't seen anyone else sharing this before: High By The Beach HBTB started with the chorus It was made when they were about halfway through the recording process, in the summer of 2015 Lana usually comes in with an idea, and Rick plays the piano trying to find the right chords (as seen in the Change video Lana posted back in 2017) Lana wrote the rest of the lyrics the same day they recorded the song The hip-hop vibes were Lana's idea All of Lana's vocals on the Honeymoon album were recorded with a U87 microphone. It was an extremly old mic Rick found somewhere in a closet of his and they never used it because it always sounded so bad, but they thought the trashy, lo-fi feel of it suited the Honeymoon tracks because it had the right amount of "dirt and brokenness" Lana usually does not record her vocals in the vocal booth, but in the control room with speakers on, which is the reason why there's always so much bleeding from the instrumental on her acapellas No autotune on Lana's vocals They call the outro a "poem". Lana wrote it after they had the idea for the music video and it was specifically written with the MV in mind. During the HM production process, recording, producing and mixing was all pretty much happening at the same time, rather than producing the song and mixing it at a later date. Lana was involved in every step of the album making process, from writing, producing, mixing and mastering it. Lana's mindset is "this is her vision, [...] this is what she wanted to hear". A lot of the mixing choices on Honeymoon were Lana's call Kieron says he thought the beat shouldve been brighter and hotter, but Lana said she doesn't like it, and he thinks they ended up with a more natural sound that way The Greatest Lana and Jack usually write songs by Jack playing on his guitar and Lana singing over it The Greatest started with the chorus chord progression Jack added flutes and horns because the song feels like a "death march" for the culture They were figuring the song out as they were going There's 40 vocal tracks in the final song They wanted it to feel like Lana is singing in a bar Lana's voice was supposed to feel like its the glue holding the entire album together, which is why its so "on top" of the instrumentals Mariners Apartment Complex There was no chorus at first, Lana started with the verses Jack thought it would be called "I'm Your Man" Again, Lana and Jack record in the same room, she's singing, he's playing the guitar The end of the song is a homage to Venice Bitch with the trippy guitars coming in

Ok time to cheer you guys up now since Lana won’t. This may be delayed but remember Zach Dawes is producing this! Since she’s getting COTCC out of the way first, maybe she’s not working with Jack anymore after that. I like his work, but I know a lot of you don’t, so maybe that’s a bright side. Maybe she and Zach Dawes have already started talking about a regular album. Also, think about the back up singers! Think about her band playing on an actual release of hers! Think about the old jazzy numbers we’ll get! Think about the possibility of her saying “daddy” on multiple tracks since that’s ridiculously common in standards! There’s still so much to look forward to. We know Lana is flaky, but please don’t let that ruin your holidays. Just pretend it wasn’t expected for today and it was always gonna follow COTCC.

At the risk of throwing my boyfriend under the bus, I just explained to him for the very first time what we were promised vs. what is actually happening in real time (aka the covers album) and he literally said: “Maybe she meant for next year” LMFAO GOODBYE HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Maybe she didn't apologize because it's still coming tonight...  All jokes aside, she should have atleast acknowledged it. Normally I don't really care when she doesn't stick to her dates but this is Christmas, and a really hard year for most people. If it wasn't going to come she should have told us. I don't think the project's been abandoned but an update would've gone a long way. Oh wellll Merry Christmas bbs and atleast we know lots is coming soon!

Remember when she said this a month ago? I just don’t believe she would scrap something she’s mentioned more than once and been seen in the studio for. I’m still holding out hope...

We didn’t get this album today, but we are still definitely getting it. Just like when she announced Chemtrails for September 5th, the date seemed unlikely once she formally announced Violet with the pre-order. Once she announced the Chemtrails pre-order, I kind of assumed this wasn’t coming this week. But I have no doubt in my mind that this will come out next year, and probably in better shape than it would’ve been in today. Don’t lose hope yet

WTF is the point of releasing an album to apologize for the delay on the album you were supposed to release if you can’t release the apology album on time either? This year has really soured Lana for me. I’m not saying I won’t support or be excited for COTCC, but I’ve never been so annoyed with Lana as I have been this year, whether it’s her intentionally wearing an ineffective mask, driving recklessly while filming it, not being able to keep her word for anything, or just being messy. Goddamn.

i love jack as a producer, but his mixing is... so bad. not just lana, taylor as well he seems to put so much effort and so many details in his productions, only to compress them all until you cant hear any of them any longer. theyre in the pre-chorus and chorus, yep

She makes it difficult to even care what she does anymore. It would be weird to get the Chemtrails title track when she just ignored this project. I've lost interest at this point. I wish I felt differently but oh well.

The only thing that pisses me off (per usual) is that she never speaks out when smth she promised gets delayed, like, tweet a quick lil 'cover album delayed, still working on it' and move on. Fans will understand. This is her 4th or 5th delayed project in a row.

Thank you for this insight! For me, Nowels definitely established the role of a mentor to Lana in terms of her art and the process itself. His experience with outstanding artists like Tupac and Dido will only have advantages to Lana! Really hope the team who produced Honeymoon will work together again ?

I won't say I still have hope but I'll say what I've previously said: her for Christmas can mean anything. It could mean week before Christmas, Christmas' eve, Christmas' day, day after Christmas, 27th, 28th and so on. I'll wait till 28th (or 29th at the latest). However, if it's not coming, I hope she says something- maybe her label didn't let her release this bc, as some users have already said, they solved the vinyl issue and COCC is coming in the next two/three months.

Pain, Disappointment, Anger

I don't like that she's putting her friends and family in every single visual thing ever now. They were on the NFR covers, in the 3-part mv, in the TG/FIILY mv (which was mostly her strutting about down at the docks, but still), in the LMLYLAW and Summertime mvs, and they're all going to be in the COCC mv. Of course it's fine to do that occasionally, but does it have to be everything? It reminds me of how you let your 5-year-old cousin help you with something - you know it's not gonna be perfect because they're 5 but you love them so you let them "help" anyway. I can only hope that COCC, the song, isn't too infused with them. I suppose it bothers me because visual imagery and escape used to be one of the strengths of her art, and it's disappointing that that's gone. You could argue that it's much more personal and therefore better now, but SoC was her best mv ever and used professional actors. It's unlikely that you can get that same standard with Chunk and the Cha Cha Matchas. Furthermore, it's not as if she's using them to portray personal storylines (which would be more acceptable); she's just using them in place of professional actors. It's similar to how she uses Chunk to take all her photos, although at least Chunk is a photographer. Val and Alex, for example, are not actresses.

Some Things Last a Long Time, hands down. It almost sounds like it’s her song - and with all respect to Daniel, Lana’s version is superior. It’s so raw, so heartbreaking, you can tell it’s coming from the heart - even though she’s singing someone else’s story. Her stripped back, simple covers are the best in my opinion, and Chelsea Hotel No. 2 is another top favourite cover of mine. She’s amazing at twisting covers in the right way to make them her own while also paying proper homage to the original. Her vocals are always so emotive, and with covers such as STLALT & CHN2, you can tell she’s really feeling the song and sharing the same emotions as the original writer x
