And this very thread magnifies the problem with stan culture — there are no boundaries and people think they are entitled to police an artist’s life! You can voice how much you will miss not being able to connect with Lana online without being a micro-manager — in fact, I think, if anything, the response she’s gotten for deactivating absolutely reinforces her decision to do so. -

21 likesThe fact that she included songs she did with Barrie on this record feels very special — that’s not to glamorize that relationship at all, but I remember that Lana had said in the audio recording of the 2017 Pitchfork interview that the year 2014 was partly difficult for her because she was “transitioning out of [her] first real relationship” — so it seems that their connection has had a lasting impact on her, and is evidently conducive to her telling her story.

I feel like some fans think that they're her promoter/manager, when at the end of the day, we're fans. We have no idea if or how Lana deactivating her social media will impact BB's sales, and even if it's negatively, I really don't think that Lana cares. Sure, she wants people to listen to it (ex: "listen to it like you listened to video games"), but there's a difference between wanting people to listen to/enjoy your music and wanting to get a #1 on the Billboard charts -

This discussion escalated for no reason Just wanted to remind you of this interesting article, written months before she deactivated her sm. Maybe Lana and her managers read it too: “Interestingly, though, Daly suggests that Del Rey might care less about her own mystique than she did in the past. "I think she was probably more enigmatic at the start of her career when there were all these questions about who she was and where she came from," she says. Now that she has proven her artistic worth, she has less need for the protective shield that enigma can provide. "To achieve true Prince-like levels of mystery, I think she'd have to be much more removed from the internet and the press than she is at the moment," Daly adds. She calls what we're seeing now with Del Rey "a slow dismantling of mystique in real-time". https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20210407-lana-del-rey-and-the-struggle-to-be-mysterious-in-pop -

i promise you all, that lana doesn't give a damn about promo, or having the best sales, and obviously her label doesn't care either if they're letting her delete her social media, she is a human-being before she is a buisness, there is nothing that gets in the way of that, she has no obligation to have social media whatsoever, and she's been in the industry for many years and has built her fanbase which is loyal & strong, she'll always have people who will buy her records & stream her music, she's already sold millions of copies of other albums, so it's not like she hasn't made millions for herself & her team, why should we care? she probably doesn't at all, and as long as she keeps releasing music, even if it's quiet surprise releases, or she does interviews/photoshoots, i'll be satisfied, if you're so bothered by her taking a more unconvential path in her career, maybe find another artist to pay attention to -

It's been 7 days since Lana Del Rey deactivated her social media accounts. The Instagram Updates thread has turned to madness (more than usual) -

adding on to this, we don't know how being present on social media could've affected her, i'm not surprised she wants to disconnect after all of the hate & criticism she received because of qftc, as well as people making comments about her appearence, anybody would've wanted to disconnect if they had thousands of comments calling them racist, a karen, a trump supporter, or saying they're ugly & fat, i really can't blame her, her own mental health & well-being is way more important than having proper promotion & sales, and you can promote your work in other ways besides posting on social media, i'm sure her team & her managers understand & support her decision -

An artist is a human being. I understand you’re trying to look at this situation through a business lens but I firmly believe that if an artist gets caught up in this type of industry machinations, it will eventually creep up on them to god-knows-what consequences. If she thinks the best for her is to quit social media, she has every right to do so. You think most artists actually use social media to promote their work? No, their accounts are ran by managers, publicists, assistants. Give the entire autonomy of social media management to any celebrity (the way Lana did) and watch some/most of them crack under the pressure. Frank Ocean doesn’t use Instagram like most people do. People like Fiona Apple don’t even do it at all - and likewise, Lana doesn’t need to as well. To even think about depositing blame onto her shoulders about something that was detrimental to her mental health is quite frankly absurd. I’m used to not agreeing with your takes at all but this one has to be the most outrageous you’ve ever written. Good god. -

Actually, I think that Lana's career can be less affected by not being on social media than Ariana's or Blackpink's. She already have a solid fanbase that follows her for over a decade. Black pink and Ariana's public is formed by teens and the GP. They're more volatile and are more likely to find a new distraction if they stopped posting. There's a reason why kpop artists are always releasing music and artists like Lorde and Fiona Apple can go MIA and still have a fanbase -

10 likesI'm so hyped for BB album today I decided not to listen to any BB songs until the album release but fuck me , the Dealer snippets are playing in my head all day , I can't wait to hear TB, BB,Arcadia & the motherfucking interlude again and the way we don't know what the middle part sounds like..so exciting aah Also the Dealer, Thunder, WFWF, NOTG , LL, CB run will destroy me & will give me several collapses. I love the choice of unreleased songs & I love their placement. And then we have the closer..omg I already can sense that the closer will be a serve, very emotional & very personal to Lana Also I'm not going to listen to the full Dealer leak, wish me luck guys. I know it will be a serve and that's why I want it to bless me during the first album listen OCTOBER 22ND WHEN??

Why ppl can’t be happy that Lana has found peace in her life, enough peace to no longer need social media, that I will never understand! -

Idk I think there’s a distinction to be made when we compare Lana to say Ariana or BlackPink.. While all of them are artists, they’re entertainers whereas Lana is obviously not. Their concerts are comparatively different experiences, and so is the way they use social media in relation to their brand. At the end of the day,, there are plenty of studies showing how harmful social media is and I think it’s within anyones rights to not want to participate in that regardless of how relevant it is to their job. I don’t think it should be “required” in business period. It’s definitely a great tool, but it should be a choice to pick up and put down at one’s discretion. You wouldn’t force someone to carry around a paint bucket 24/7 even when they’re not painting -

This is oversimplying. She has a contract with a record company to make music and to receive money for doing so. If she doesn't want to make music for money then she can quit her label any time she wants and just make it for free, or not at all. Whilst I have very limited sympathy for record companies, imo this could've been solved if she'd at least directed everyone to another account to follow for updates. She just deserted socials, and no one has any idea where to look for updates, etc. I sympathise with her on a personal level but it honestly wasn't very professional, especially considering that it's first and foremost her professional artist account. I mean Ben and Ed basically just re-post her posts so it remains to be seen if they're gonna take the updates on. Social media plays a huge role in music promotion whether people like it or not -
