10 years ago to this very day, January 27th, 2012, Born to Die was released as Lana Del Rey’s debut album with Interscope and Polydor. Born to Die was first released in Ireland & Germany on the 27th, France & UK on the 30th, and in the US on the 31st. It was the 5th best-selling album of 2012 and the #1 best-selling vinyl record of the 2010s that was released during that time. The album has been regarded as one of the best albums of the 2010s by publications such as Billboard, NME, and The Guardian. Born to Die has also been certified Platinum in nearly 20 countries. The record sparked many cult classic hits such as Video Games, Summertime Sadness, and Blue Jeans, and has spent 416 weeks on the Billboard 200, making Lana the second female in history to have spent 8 years on the list. Happy 10th birthday, Born to Die! Oh, how the years fly by xx Taking a trip down memory lane... Photo Gallery: Music Videos: Live Performances: Interviews: Award Acceptances: Memorable Moments: -

10 Years of Born to Die

My most treasured possession is my Born to Die CD that Lana signed for me. It’s the one thing I would save if I was ever in a house fire or something. The CD was given to me by my best friend, who actually at the time I wasn’t even on good terms with. Some friends and I were planning a holiday party with a Secret Santa gift exchange, and she drew my name. By the time the party came, we were in this huge fight over nothing so she didn’t even attend, but still made the effort to buy me the Target edition of Born to Die and hand it off to another friend to bring to me. Then, 3 and a half years later when I saw Lana in London, she came down straight to me after finishing her final song, had a chat & gave me a hug, and then I asked her if she would sign the booklet for me. She had a pink sharpie and asked, “is it okay if I sign in pink?” I told her pink was my favourite and it would be an honour! So, she signed it addressed to me, and it was the most special moment ever. Right afterwards, I snapped a photo of it and sent it to my best friend (whom I had made up with a few months after the holiday party years back) and told her the good news! We still talk about it to this day, and how it was probably destiny that she gifted me the CD, albeit begrudgingly at the time, only for it be signed by Lana herself a couple years later. Funny how some things just work out xx (A screencap of a video the girl standing next to me took while Lana was signing my booklet! During this clip she was telling me, "I'm so happy you are here, you're so cute!" I died.) -

24 likesI had just graduated university and was living on my own without roommates for the first time when I discovered this album in May 2012 and within a week I was completely obsessed and had already found AKA, Sirens, and a ton of unreleased songs, and from there my love for Lana was set forever. I feel so grateful to be witnessing her art in real time, and she will forever be the most important artist of all time to me. Thank you for everything Lana, and congrats to Born To Die, an absolutely iconic game-changer!!!

21 likesI'm screaming, crying, shaking, throwing up. This is such an old and cute video, her golden hair and her little words You guys should also check out this video of Lana singing Off To The Races before it was released, such a different style Someone in the comments says "When I finally get the album this will be the very first song I'm going to listen to. I am going to crank it up so loud it's gonna take police to get me to turn it down." 10 years of Lana Del Rey Here is she singing Blue Jeans with the homemade video intro And if you were there back on the internet in 2012 you'll remember this iconic Lana Del Rey moment in the form of a gif "I really hate encores, but listen i really haven't done this song live but my sets are so fucking short, but i wanna make them longer, so. i'm just gonna try it, if you judge me, i'll kill you"

21 likesI hadn't heard of Lana when Born To Die was released, it would take me a bit longer until I found her and then a little bit more before I understood her music and fell in love. BTD-Paradise was my first Lana album, but I started with Born To Die since I listened from start to end. Discovering Lana and BTD went slowly, I had to give her a few tries before simply, helplessly loving her and her songs. From then after, it's been amazing. Lana was the first western artist I discovered on my own, I was previously just listening to whatever my older brothers were listening to. Lana and her world were mine. Mine to discover, mine to obsess over, mine to lose myself in. I was living a good life, struggling with nothing but my maths grades (and, well, my parent's bad relationship and dad's slowly declining health), so I couldn't relate to her lyrics but I could feel them. I could feel her music, the production. It was like nothing I had heard before, it wasn't just a fun song to elevate your mood, not just a song you heard on the radio and liked for a few weeks. Lana was different. Boy, am I glad that I looked her up on youtube after reading about her in newspapers and seeing her face in every H&M store. Thanks to this album and to Lana, I found comfort when I was alone, a world to dive into, and friends who were there for me when my in-real-life ones seemed to had forgotten about my existance. BTD was executed perfectly. Not a single flaw, not even in her homemade music videos. The end of Summertime Sadness and the "how does meth change our brain?" line in Carmen gave me goosebumps, and I don't think I'll ever forget the scary feelings they gave me the first time as I watched them. I still think the videos for this album are her best ones, and I think I'll continue to think so for a long time. And she just seemed so mysterious back then, like, I couldn't tell if the things she sang about were true or made up, or both, and that just made it all so interesting. I love this album so much, and sure, at times it can sound a bit old in terms of lyrics, but it never gets old. I just know it won't. I seriously can't pick a favorite song off it or even attempt to rank a top 5 list. A phenomenal major-label debut that I will never grow tired of playing. Here's to ten more years of an iconic album!

20 likesIconique, show-stopping, culturally significant, career defining, brilliant, never done before, long lasting impact and so on. This album IS the blue print. I didn't quite started listening to Lana when the album came out, that would be a few months later during the summer of 2012, but today feels really special.

19 likes10 years of a record that is more than just a record. Born to Die is a once-in-a-lifetime catalyst that marks the dawn of a breakthrough in culture. There will never be an album that influences every pocket of culture in the ways that Born to Die did. This record synthesized so many classic sounds and elements — from lush, cinematic strings and hip-hop-sampled beats, to the smoky and languorous vocals of Lana which soared atop — to create a never-done-before atmosphere that meshed old Hollywood glamour with emcee swag. Born to Die is also almost completely responsible for shifting the discourse in the 2010s around women telling their stories and being their emotionally vulnerable and authentic selves. Congratulations need to be extended to this record a decade after its release for forging 1) a new age of music for every genre it touched upon; 2) increased lyrical agency for women and listeners alike; 3) being the start of a discography that would introduce the world to a living legend - our living legend. Happy birthday, Born to Die!

Omg I remember how obsessed I was with her entire persone and aesthetic. Recently I remembered the Popcandies Paparazzi videos, there was a new one like every day in 2012. Iconic. I still remember random quotes "Love you Lana" - "Love you Maeve" "What do you want, I got nothing... I got nothing, let's get Jodie" "I like to drive fast" "You're such a bad girrrl" GOD. Lana was the first musician who really made me feel music. And summer. I was obsessed with Diet Mtn Dew, the demo she uploaded to her yt channel, and also with TIWMUG, OTTR, Video Games and Radio. These 5 songs were on loop for months. -
19 likesI hate to admit it, but this album changed my life. Though I only discovered Lana really with Ultraviolence, BTD was my introduction to Lana's universe and for that I will always be thankful. Also, damn, the music slaps

So, BOZ said on ATRL yesterday that Summertime Sadness was almost swapped for Without You on the standard tracklist. This actually makes sense considering during her pre-release shows in 2011 she didn’t sing Summertime Sadness, yet typically opened her set with Without You x -

18 likesalso, btw, i often see people say that this album is aging badly or that it's immature... however, i think it's the opposite this album has such a unique & innovative sound, it's a mix between so many different sounds, styles, & genres from different periods of time & artistic movements, so, on it's own, you really can't pinpoint it's sound to a specific period of time, it sounds nothing like anything which was released in 2011/2012, i think it just gets better with age... i also don't feel like it's immature, at least, in my opinion, i discovered lana when i was a young teenager & as i've gotten older i feel like the music & the messages of the music & how it can be interpreted has become so much more in-depth & relatable, even if i don't really relate to the exact experience she may be talking about, she writes her lyrics in a way where many people can relate to it, & find solace in it, i think it's silly to think this album won't stand the test of time, people will still enjoy it just as much in the 2060's
