@Elle I just wanna say that it’s amazing how you transcribed this interview when we only got pictures of it - that takes true dedication and it doesn’t go unnoticed you’re the best.

"Blowing up her own ego" is exactly the main impression I got from this article. Even if I enjoyed the parts where she discusses music or some aspects regarding daily life, the fact that her and Jack act as if they were some kind of omniscent genius bugs me off. Lana talks as she's eaten all the stuff the critics said about her last year ("a laureate poet of a world on fire" or whatever), and Im happy that she acknowledges she is talented, but what made me feel close to her since I knew her was how foot-on-earth she was, and how self-aware of her ignorance on some topics she seemed to be too, as it seemed to push her to explore deeper from her artistic perspective. She's always had a quite intuitive way to approach to reality, even if not always educated, she's always been good intentioned and sharp in her own ways, and I've always appreciated that honesty a lot. Now reading her talking about how she thinks she knows about everything while dropping the comment on how people will look more on genetics to know about their psychological issues... She obviously isnt aware still, at her 35 years, that most people in the world arent ruminating at their LA mansions about the "culture", but facing huge structural problematics related to the possibility and struggle to materially survive, and that mental health may have a lot more to with that than with intuitive healers or whatever she thinks she knows and we dont. She's definetly eccentric and has a quite egotic and privileged way to look at the world, and I guess that may be part of her enchantment as weird and genial as she is. Not genial on the omniscently way she thinks she is, but in the confusing, sensitive and beautiful sense I think she gets to approach to the world. She's random, clumsy and very smart too. Truly wanting to listen to whatever she's been working on.

Drags incoming but that's never stopped me before, so I'm not a huge fan of artists interviewing other artists because such interviews tend to turn into mutual backscratching, and I am not sure if that's the reason, but I think she comes off as quite arrogant in parts of this. I really don't like this: This just comes across to me as her shirking any kind of personal responsibility in interpersonal relationships and blaming the other person. The whole thing has a tone that I don't like, and she literally says several times, "I know I'm right/was right". That's not to say she's wrong about everything, but Question for the Culture was a disaster so to act like she's some sort of genius who has human behaviour and existence all worked out is ... not it. I suppose this is her doubling-down on that, again? Like does she think other people don't think about this? With all that said, the parts where she talks about the music are good. Idk how I feel about COCC mentioning her girlfriends but that is, of course, her prerogative. I suppose that's why Chunk and Charlie are in the mv, because she said it also mentions her siblings. Idk what she's talking about when she says she's going to have to raise her dogs, cats and chickens on her own, because she is never single ... ever? What is she talking about? Also why would anyone be surprised that she actually writes? That's literally her job. Anyway, to end on a positive note, I hope it's delayed because she's putting "Dealer" in and making sure she's 100% happy with COCC before releasing it. ETA: I also like this comment by Jack That's one of my favourite lines, too, and I feel like it links back to the intro of 13 Beaches.

I think it's more cringy than funny because they obviously have this idea built in their heads that they're these Anton LaVey type of characters who hold satanic rituals in their houses when they're just like every other person in LA who wears yoga pants and Sketchers, looking for the freshest roses to put on their $5,000 solid oak dining room table

I guess it makes sense that she reacted to the backlash earlier this year the way that she did if she thinks that singing about being crazy a hundred times over is equivalent to singing about domestic crises? All of her vaguely "political" songs delve into a very isolated focus at some point, focusing on just her feelings with the real world stuff just as a catalyst and not the focus at all, which is why I maintain that they're not political songs - she never gives a real point of view. And that's fine because that's how a lot of people feel and it's part of why people are drawn to her. But trying to claim that she "knew we weren't ready" and had been singing about it for years? I really think she thinks she's this generations Bob Dylan from how much she brings him up in relation to her and I don't think she'll really be of much interest to me for as long as she continues blowing up her own ego. Especially when she reacts to people's pain with god bless and fuck off. Glad we got some insight on the album, and thank you to Elle for writing this up, but she's becoming more and more of a warning against resting on your own laurels and surrounding yourself with yesmen.

I probably wouldn't be able to speak if I was in Lana's presence so I don't blame the fans that don't ask her things

No, this superior attitude of hers is definitely new. I can never understand why people get soooo pressed when people criticise her. You actually can be both a fan AND critical of some of her words and actions. Props to the people who actually construct counter arguments instead of the blanket "u R a H8eR aNd I dOn'T lIKe iT" nonsense.

That isn't what anyone has said at all. It's the fact that she speaks as if she has a level of awareness about everything which eludes mere mortals. She's obviously very talented and successful, but this interview seems to be a prime example of letting it go to one's head.

At least he’s not a cop, was scoping his Instagram and he’s seems genuinely sweet. I would be so happy for her to finally end up with a really nice guy

This interview is so amazing. One thing I’ve always admired about Lana is how she’s firm in her beliefs and confident in her own abilities - I think she really speaks to the saying that if you don’t believe in what you’re doing, then nobody will. And for that reason, she’s a huge inspiration! The way she puts things and the way she’s so self-actualized and aware of her own mechanisms really just reminds me why she will forever be my favourite artist!

I do like unapologetic lana but I hope she doesn't let that ego get ahead of her and with this interview we can now see the kinda dynamic she has with Jack and why she's continued to collab with him lmao...a true yes man till the end! imo jack is REALLY not good for her artistry, yes man never are he's just there to stroke her ego and tell her she's the bestest. on the music side of things I'm now worried with the words "folk, country album...piano" pls dont let dealer be the yosemite of the era

Some people just love to be offended and SJW culture actively encourages those tendencies. It's dumb but at the end of the day they are wasting their time being mad over things that really don't matter. There is nothing wrong with anything that she has said in this interview.

More to come Interview Magazine Mel Ottenburg shot by ? Chuck Video by Charlie Grant Mud Barker Hair Sheridan Ward Make up ? Etienne Ortega interview by little Edie Jack Antoff"

I loved this interview and it didn’t come across as arrogant to me. I’ve been thinking this for years: Lana has been ahead of her time. I mean she really dropped the BTD album when the world was still obsessed with hyper-aggressive EDM pop, while she was sounding manic in her vocals, was mixing classical with hip hop, and singing about unhealthy relationships and dying. And she got so much flack for it and has over the years for things she’s said in songs and interviews. She inspired and opened the doors for a whole new generation of artists, yet they’re the ones out there getting Grammys, dominating charts, and being household names, while Lana still seems underground somehow. She was right all along. She has been under-appreciated and under-recognized. So no, I don’t find this interview arrogant because it’s true.

This was unbearable to read. I couldn't make it all the way through since my eyes couldn't stop rolling at her ego. Exactly why people should be interviewed by journalists and not by their friends. @Elle I dunno how you wrote it out I would've had to log off and scream at a wall.

How do you get toxicity from normal criticism? The only people making a genuine issue out of this are you guys, angry that people disagree with what lana says

I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say that getting the response of "you just want her to be depressed" is so, so tiring. I don't. But I also know that casting yourself in some curse-of-cassandra role, blaming other people entirely, constantly thinking of yourself as a victim of society and "the culture" and never questioning yourself, your motives, your actions, and whether you're right about things isn't a sign of happiness. She literally says in the interview "I don't feel like I'm doing okay. I just know now that I'm always right." That isn't a sign of someone getting better or "being confident", and from the fact she goes on to talk about the virus and trump and stuff she isn't just talking about women singing sexually or whatever (which she also absolutely did not invent). She's projecting out a shit ton, which again she says nearly verbatim. If you read this and came away thinking that she's just happy and confident I really don't know what to say other than maybe read it again. It's not unheard of for people to think of themselves both as a victim and as a mega-genius. The two go very much hand in hand.

lanaboards: she's so beautiful! so talented! this album will be her best! nfr album of the year! born to die album of the century! shes ahead of her time, a lyrical genius and a great american poet! she deserved to win album of the year at the grammys! one of the most talented woman in the industry! lana: haha i think my work is good lanaboards: you guys remind me of those memes of girls being told they're beautiful and sexy in their dm's and they're like thanks haha i know and the men are like i take that back you ugly whore how dare you

Lmao where is anyone here offended? It's been a civil discourse if anything. Users have pointed out things that they don't agree with and also things they've liked about the interview. That's how criticism works. I'm sorry, but I am not going to kiss anyone's ass, that's just completely wrong. I find it actually weird, that there are some here more concerned about what other users disagree with?

I'm not trying to tell her how to feel, which is why I'm writing this all on lanaboards instead of in an angry email or something. How "valid" her feelings are is of literally no interest to me. I think it's a joke that she calls herself an underdog and then plays with her fans about the release date of her album because she knows they'll buy it anyway. Refusing to listen to any type of criticism is never a good sign in an artist. Her calling out Kanye in that comment and in her song is starting to look much more like projection than any valid concerns. She can feel however she wants and she doesn't need my permission to feel it. But equally I don't need her permission to think that she sounds like a self-absorbed yuppie with both a god and a victim complex.

I'm getting a lot of: "Why is she not depressed, why is she feeling confident?" vibes from some comments here. How dare she and Jack like each other and feel good about what they're working on.

Love two new song titles but jesus christ This interview is literally Lana just rimming herself, and jack joining in I mean they could only ever have that dynamic because Lana would have nothing to do with him otherwise, but still

Rumors is that guy is Lana's new boyfriend. He's a guitarist name Clayton Johnson. She follows him and vise versa. His page is @ claywatch He left a comment under her video the other day. He is the guy in the video Lana posted in her stories today.

I don't think Lana handles her own facebook page so she probably sent that to whoever posts on her facebook and the person didn't exclude the "can do this" bit

He left a comment on that video of her eating the playing card saying "I wish I was that card"

this part is so funny, WHY does jack think that making iced tea with friends and going to the garden center are shocking eccentric activities in freaky places and Lana's examples aren't much better either

I don’t understand how she still believes, that she’s an underdog? I‘d say that with LFL that has changed dramatically. She’s been acknowledged as inspiration by a lot of other big artists. So this is something what makes her seem to blow up her ego as others have rightfully said. Nonetheless I can’t wait for the album and loved the parts about the music.
