L+F could have done stupendously in her discography for me if it were an EP/mini-album. 1. Handmade Heaven 2. Superstar 3. Enjoy Your Life 4. To Be Human 5. You (demo version) 6. Emotional Machine 7. Too Afraid 8. End of the Earth 9. Baby (bonus track) I think the biggest issue with L+F is just how bland the production is. There's a reason why Baby didn't age like the rest of the tracks. Some of the tracks like Superstar and End of the Earth would have so much more replay-ability for me if their production was touched by an angel. We need to some decadent, fresh-sounding production, or we need simply just piano and nothing else, that's where Marina does best. AND ALSO! She needs to release under Marina Diamandis. Who though MARINA would be a good name change?

To be honest, I can't wait for her next album to be released. I just want this non ending L+F debate to stop. I want the album to slowly disappear from everyone's minds, so we can move on to a much better album/era. Knowing her, she won't have her album released after 2 or 3 more years tho.

it's like meeting a beautiful baby everyone loves and then punching it. I guess it's audacious but everyone else will see it as horrifying. As a quick overview, the main problem with the song is that we all heard the original, thus it's impossible to remove that positionality for some people (myself included). The original BAR told a brilliant story of schadenfreude - it was full of vitriol, Lana having the last laugh over someone who put her last and neglected her by obsessing over something else constantly, which ultimately wasn't worth it since they lost everything. She is literally one of the world's biggest alternative stars singing to (probably Barrie) 'you got bored of me trying to write music, now you're obscure, dumped and forgotten - how does that feel now you've lost everything including me?'. Anyone that says they don't understand the problem with the new one either didn't hear the original first or is just being absurd, because even Lana butchers the lyrics by moving between past and present tense, and the bridge makes no fucking sense. "I see you for who you really are - why the thousands of girls of girls love the way Bill plays guitar" as she realises she's under the same spell and is not different to his thousands of other disposable fans. I see you for who you really are and TOPANGA'S HOT TONIGHT!? or I see you for who you really are and I JUST WANNA PARTY WITH YOU? Could this chorus be any more fucking disparate. We've now disregarded everything before, thrown away a message people feel strongly yet so ephemerally (especially scorning your ex - hellooooooo romantic culture), and replaced it with OOOO BABY I WANNA PARTY and I wanna SEX SEX SEX you TEE HEE TAKIN' OFF MY BATHING SUIT im so cheeky and in LOVE!. And another thing - the new one literally relegates The Next Best American Record to a red herring. In the original, it was an unobtainable goal that demanded sacrifices that ultimately destroyed a relationship. The fame that is being chased is what consumes them, in a brilliant self-referential way as she records what was to be her leading single and the original title of the work. In this new version, it's apparently just another exhausting aspect of the relationship but doesn't matter because 'we were just that good' and then the verse + bridge makes no references to how it impacts on their relationship. As we discussed in the Queer Affinity for Lana thread, I think a lot of people really loved the original since for her audience it was a lot more demure, and there is a quiet regret but also scathing taunt and victory in the final lines "How does that taste now / Now that you've lost the game / Baby how're you feeling now? / I told you". It's awesome. Empowering. Like walking slowly away from a building that just blew up as the villain delivers one last scream. We have gone on a journey from the intial adoration, to a problem being presented, to the bridge showing the villain, and then the vindication. The song is genius. The new one disregards the entire original message and replaces it with something really, really vapid. We didn't need to hear another song about how cool it is to be in love - we had that with Love Song. I don't wanna sing along to "I'm taking off my bathing suit" - it sounds cheap and tacky. And a few other factors - it sonically does not fit with NFR, and it literally goes against what she claimed the record was about and the title song about the guy thinking he's top shit but in reality, he just actually is shit. I've no doubt Lana just at the last minute went 'hmmm maybe it's too mean' but to shoot an entire music video for it and then reworked it? Plus can't even bother performing it in the right pitch live . . . or remember the lyrics. Ugh. It could've actually been her best song. I will now take rebuttals and people saying "THAT'S JUST YOUR OPINION".

Only she already took revenge, when she wasted the music video on White Mustang. Still weeping for the masterpiece it would have been

'Blue Velvet', 'The Other Woman' and 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' are all amazing covers, I don't understand the hate with any of these fine songs.

Still don’t understand why she does that. Like who films a music video for one song, changes their mind, and just slaps another song over the same footage? Ultraviolence would have made so much more sense at the time if she put it out with its intended video. Luckily, it becoming the freak video wasn’t too jarring at all, but still. The visuals made more sense with the story of UV, especially cause she said it was true to life.

Maybe Lana purposely sabotaged BAR because it leaked so early. #revenge

Hi everyone! As promised, I'm getting new themes ready for you all asap. I just finished coding in a new theme for 'Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass' You can switch to the new theme by scrolling to the very bottom of the site, selecting 'Theme' and then selecting 'Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass' Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the theme, or if you notice any issues with it! I can make tweaks to it as needed. Hope you all enjoy the first new theme since 2017 lol. I'll also work on creating and coding in new themes for NFR & COTCC after its release, and then of course creating some past-era themes for our Supporters 2.0 group! x Preview:

I'm getting into her music recently and wow she has so many good songs. Don't understand why she's so underrated.

No I think we'd still be having the same discussion even without EH in her discography. Froot was as least a fully realized concept when it came to promotion and it has lyrics that actually feel personal to her. L+F just feels like a faceless album she made because she was tired of singing about her personal experiences and honestly every artist has one of those so it's fine, but it was unexpected from someone who showed 3 albums of consistency and vision... and it certainly doesn't help people treat it like a high-brow artistic statement that we just didn't get. It's a (mostly) well-written album let down massively by the production, which sanded off all the quirks that make a Marina album a Marina album. We can hear that in the demo for You

as weird as this may sound marina does best with funky production, she can be pop all she wants but her singing style is too out of the ordinary for simplistic mainstream production, even her attempts at making more mainstream music with EH was done flawlessly. primadonna's eccentric electro house production suits her exaggerated vocals so well, TFJ is a good balance between solemn ballads and experimental pop rock which i think is best for her style, froot has vocal elements of classic marina which are brought to life with the 80s synth pop influence... and so on

this this this. even if some of the production in EH has been aging, those who lived through the era (i started to listen to her like 4 months before the character died) will not let that managing glass down. as silly at it sounds i feel that there is fan pressure of M5 being expected to not only go back to marina's style, but be better than most of her discography

I feel like if she doesn't release an album that is her magnum opus or whatever you'd call it, the debate will likely continue with the next album. Electra Heart being such a strong album in terms of sound (for the 2012 pop music climate), visuals, rollout, and concept (etc.) has definitely put the successive releases under a huge magnifying glass. If M had released TFJ -> Froot -> L+F, I doubt we'd be having this sort of debate, but EH has truly created a level of nostalgia and a level of quality that will always overshadow each successive release until she does it again. In my heart, I do feel like M5 would have been out by now if it hadn't been for COVID... It felt that she was very ready to move on from L+F. But then again we all know how Marina loves to draw out an album release, huh.

dk if this is unpopular but I think lana's "poppier" unreleased songs are some of her best unreleased ones I love the carefree energy of songs like "BBM Baby" and "Back To The Basics"

As someone who didn't even notice the lyric/production changes when NFR came out () and had BAR as my least favorite song on NFR, you have now made me care about the song. Just listened to the original, and the lyrics are definitely more powerful. I'm now angry about the lyric decision, but you made me care about the song more which I appreciate. I guess your point is also strengthened, because I do feel that I would connect more with the song if it had been released on NFR with the original lyrics. Instead, it just became a kinda boring song to me. I didn't dislike it, but I wasn't necessarily drawn to it either. Had the OG lyrics been on the album, I would've noticed over time and would've understood the appeal of the song more.

Lana doesn't really have any sad/depressing songs. Most of them are melancholy at best but I've never cried to her songs apart from Starry Eyed (which isn't even released). Old Money doesn't make me sad either and I never understood how people can cry to it because it just seems 'meh' overall. I think there's just a lack of 'numbness' in her lyricism and voice? Same goes for Heroin, Black Beauty, Video Games, Swan Song etc (all of these I still love, but just doesn't jerk any emotion) For example this song below I've cried to many times:

I don't think there's a reason other than taste differences, but: TNBAR > Video Games (and even TNC > Video Games) On why she changed the song Architecture/BAR to TNBAR, I think she went through a process of realizing the original song, in it's negative connotation, was at least as much about her as he, so she didn't feel comfortable releasing it. As for Barrie, he left Kassidy, where he had a much better chance at commercial stardom, not (strictly) for LDR, but because the music he's currently putting out is in a direction Kassidy didn't want to go. His sense of "best" is more in the direction of the PJ Harvey/Elliott Smith constellation of stars, so his sense of "best" isn't even ever convincingly addressed (i.e., "all for fame"?) in the older version of the song. Both songs, as songs about artistic monomania, seem equally flawed to me, but the released version has less repetitive lyrics, and I still count it as one of the masterpieces of NFR.

I'd have to redesign them since I don't have access to them, plus they wouldn't be designed correctly for the new layout anyway - I do remember the old UV theme, which I really liked, so I can try to redesign that one. I also have a loose concept for a new UV theme for our Supporters 2.0 category, so I may make multiple themes for each past-era for our Supporters 2.0 to choose from! x

I have an appreciation for both versions. I don't like that she cut the outro but I actually really like the new chorus. The NFR version's chorus is so breezy and just makes you feel good. Basically you just have two versions of the track to listen to depending on your mood. Really don't get all the massive hate for the NFR version lol.

I agree, people still treat EH as her best album. Most fans want a EH 2.0, that's why some people dislike anything post EH. In my opinion, M5 is her last and only chance. If her next album ends up being worse than L+F (which I doubt it could be possible ), people are gonna keep hating on her and the L+F debate is gonna get even more aggressive. She already lost many fans, all that's left is hope that M5 is as good as FROOT at least.

Why does this feel like the first time an artist has ever revisited a concept/era after moving on. Living. Manic was cute, HFK was pretty, and Badlands was GORGEOUS. Would love to see a Badlands part 2 for H4. The best parts of Manic were the sort of Badlands-esque feel of Ashley + Suga Interlude...

Just popping in to say ~controversially~ that I prefer the followers option - it was always kinda awkward when some random added me as their friend and I had literally never spoken to them before (and definitely vis-versa SORRY). Plus it's fun to win people over with mutual respect. Gotta catch 'em all!

Rich Lee must've been like "what the fuck are you talking about" when it was edited. and yeah, Ultraviolence would've been my favourite video probably ever if it had kept its original music. The drinking the Kool Aid and then wiping the mouth is one of the sexiest, most beautiful yet paralysing things I've ever seen. UGH LANA YOU DOOOOOFUS. and I love YOU. the taste. Justice for BAR

100% agree. I love that she now owns that she was also obsessed with writing that album and not just him. Ok, the line “there’s something I never knew I wanted and I want it” is far from perfect, but the new chorus now refers to Heroin, which I love. And anyways, my favorite parts of BAR always were the verses and the bridge, which she kept intact. I always thought the old chorus was a bit meh and a bit contradictory to the bridge.
