it's so funny to me that people here are slamming this. A fun bop with a great hook, banging production and a superb beat. The rare Lana bop. My boyfriend who hasn't liked a Lana song since Cinnamon Girl, has learned the lyrics to Tough in 2 days. The song is easy listening that will put Lana back on the radio for the first time in half a decade! Can you all just take a chill pill and go listen to your Bartenders and interludes and stop crapping on Tough just because it's not a standard-issue "fuck me to death" Lana song? Let Lana have some fun, some radio play and some success. Thanksss

i really wanted katy to have a successful comeback because she was one of my fav pop girlies in the early 2010s . but the way shes been doing all this just doesnt sit right with me for multiple reasons. her comeback single being women's world is so hypocritical in so many reasons & i dont even have to mention the kesha situation. the music video opening up with her sexualizing rosie the riveter and her background dancers who are also skinny dressing skimpy doesn't seem like the best way to empower women by appealing to the male gaze lol. Katy and the women look hot i dont want to come off like im hating them but i just think so many other artists have portrayed shared women experiences much more accurately lately. some of these are a little different topics but example: skinny by billie ellish, and girl so confusing by charli and lorde. katy seems stuck in 2012 tbh, obviously women should be empowered by what they wear, but being a woman is more than just dressing in revealing outfits and chanting feminism. it just feels very dated and surface level, like we've moved past this. she looks amazing and i dont want to hate her but this was not done well.

Wrong choice for a comeback single.

I just want Lasso. I doubt her label is forcing her to change the concept, she’s had virtually universal control over her music. It’s probably more that she wants to hold onto this popular TikTokified image, but I really hope she doesn’t sacrifice her art for it.

wait the lifetime snippet being a hit... anyways a bit too much performance going on in here. as terrible of a decision as it was to work with d* l***, immediately invalidating her status as the 10's pop star is not gonna work... granted it is nothing groundbreaking, but it is a fun pop song. saying she has never made good or interesting music though is factually incorrect as pre-witness was hit after hit after hit. i would LOVE for her to go back to her early OOTB sound as that is when i started listening to her and love that rock infused sound. she has such a good voice for it regarding the reviews, i honestly think (as they do with almost every artist) news sites are piggybacking off the drama for clicks, knowing controversial headlines and content brings viewers and revenue. instead of saying anything meaningful, they use buzzwords like flop and catastrophe, which is just overkill and invalides any persuasive arguments they have about the song. i have seen it alot of twitter today where pop accounts are just tweeting negative things for ad-share revenue. just boriiiinggggggg also don’t blame her for the sexual imagery. embracing post pregnancy body can feel liberating for women so i don’t really see the issue... its a womans world, truly

The fact that there is already a certain collective hopelessness for the release of Lasso is what makes me believe more that it really came.

Everyone saying this is "her brand", but I disagree. Yes, simple pop lyrics were always her thing, but they were once very clever. Wide Awake, Pearl, Teenage Dream, Unconditionally, Roar - all while simple weren't basic, which I feel this verges on. I think the main problem is that if the melody was catchy enough, it could make up for it, but the way she just sort of speak-sings the verses ruins it. I think the album as a whole already sounds better than Smile, and it does feel like a proper Katy Perry era (as opposed to even Witness), but I am not sure if this single choice was the right direction. She can't really afford a stumble.

Honestly, as horrible and painful as the song is, still better than anything Sabrina Carpenter has ever made. We need to start carrying the same energy people love to have for Katy for every mediocre, shitty release nowadays Taylor, Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae all of these mediocre flavorless girls, releasing Tik Tok music.... Katy is obviously jumping on the bandwagon here... but somebody else driving the cart.... Like the nuance is that it’s better than a jack Harlow, or any other flavorless United States radio pop music, but it’s not a good song at all. And I’ve already heard it on the radio twice today. I don’t know if everybody knows this, but in the west, it’s usually the shittiest and most simple mediocre songs that get played five times a day on the radio because labels are able to pay for promotional slots. the only reason the song might be semi-successful is the sheer amount of payola and label foot work being done. It sucks that she’s beyond sold out with this latest move. Sue me, but I believe that the witness era was much too ahead of its time, and all of the concepts and deconstruction of poppy enigma that happened almost feels like it was just thrown to the wind. I know witness is not the most well received album in history, but the message is good it’s clear and it’s cohesive. What we are now beholding is somebody who has no other ideas than to cater to what is currently selling. It sucks to see somebody who used to be as impactful and iconic as Katy Perry fall so far from Grace and still be denied ever doing the right things, the right way ever again. Because she really CAN do the right things. Some of the snippets sound great, but she wanted to cause a stir with this lead single and I'm not exactly okay with the whole reason. Like it's something that didn't need to be givin' more credence and whatever Katy is gonna get flack for, it's going to be 10x hotter of a topic. She knew that and she knew the conversation wouldn't be drowned out and that's why i'm really conflicted about the lead. Bad taste for the beginning of the era, complete shill move. And it was in no world going to "make music love katy again" or anything..

A little birdy told me that the record label are pushing for a more commercial album which led to the breakdown of the ‘Lasso’ concept, due to her recent resurgence in popularity

Seriously, even non-fans want to hear her rock side again I second this… One of the Boys is honestly her best album… the title track, fingerprints, thinking of you, and a cup of coffee are insanely good. Teenage Dream and Prism are good though also, so not sure why some think she’s always been bad.

The song is actually alright, but it sounds like another Dr Luke rehash with his same old production. I’m not sure this is the single that is gonna return her to the top, I think the general public have fresher pop singers that are around like Sabrina Carpenter and Chapelle Roan to feast on so this kind of feels stale in comparison.

This was soooo random. Like it made more sense when she also performed Serial Killer & You Can Be the Boss during Endless Summer since those were the most popular unreleased songs during that time, but Us Against the World was just such a random choice. I was so happy about it though because that song has always been in my top 10 favourite unreleased. Another random one though is when she performed Paradise, another not-as-popular unreleased song, during a show in 2018. Apparently she had been heard sound checking it at other shows during LATTM but only performed it that one time. I wonder what made her decide to perform those, I guess she just really likes them. Anyway, give them all the SYTH release treatment! Xx
