I love her Instagram caption: "Don't take the necklace...and if you already did - give it back..." This was one of the most ambiguous songs in the album and now that she did a music video, the lyrics are much more clear. That's one of the reasons music videos add so much to the album and era, it's not just visuals.

I love the meta references to her old videos, which are almost caricatural. Especially the old guy: he’s really an old man, not even some tattooed daddy.

Before the video I thought “White fire, cinnamon on my teeth and I’m sitting at a stoplight in northern town. I feel lucky.” was Lana going back to her hometown after her fame and every fucked up thing she has seen on Hollywood but after seeing the video I think it’s actually the opposite. It’s young Lana/Lizzy getting ready to leave her hometown, she is on the verge of a new beginning and she feels lucky. It also ties with how she drives somewhere out of range, somewhere far away. I don’t understand what white noise coming out of brain means but maybe it’s her getting robotic and losing herself on the journey of fame?

Hi everyone, If you guys ever have an idea, I might need some help in my thesis, I'll take everything (lyrics, life moments, interview moments, visuals, honestly anything you can think of) !!! In my thesis, "Commentary on fame: Poetics and politics of womanhood through Lana Del Rey's life and art," I aim to explore the complex relationship between fame, gender, and artistic expression by analyzing the music and public persona of Lana del Rey. To do so, I will draw on theoretical frameworks from feminist theory, cultural studies, and musicology. One of the key concepts in my analysis is power, and I will draw on feminist theories of power to explore the ways in which female artists like Lana del Rey navigate the politics of representation and the construction of celebrity identities. Specifically, I will use Michel Foucault's notion of power as productive and diffuse to argue that power operates not only through top-down coercion, but also through the production of subjectivities and identities through discourse. I will also draw on the concept of intersectionality, developed by Kimberlé Crenshaw, to argue that gender intersects with other aspects of identity, such as race and class, to shape the experiences and opportunities of female artists in the music industry. To support my analysis, I will use specific examples from Lana del Rey's music and public persona. For instance, I will analyze the themes of femininity, sexuality, and power in her music, drawing on specific songs like "Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd" and "Born to Die." I will also examine her controversial statements about feminism and her relationship with the media, drawing on interviews and media coverage from specific dates and sources. Furthermore, I will use concepts from cultural studies to explore the cultural and historical context of celebrity culture. Specifically, I will use Stuart Hall's concept of encoding/decoding to analyze how the media frames and represents female artists like Lana del Rey, and how audiences decode and interpret these representations. I will also draw on Richard Dyer's theory of the star system to analyze the ways in which celebrity culture constructs and commodifies celebrity identities. Overall, my thesis seeks to offer a critical analysis of the complex and often fraught world of celebrity culture, and its intersections with gender and artistic expression. By drawing on specific examples from Lana del Rey's life and art, I hope to provide a nuanced and insightful perspective on the intricate interplay between fame, gender, and artistic expression.

If the BTS hadn’t been part of the MV, it would have been something stunning, like the COCC MV, but it would have lacked some dimension IMO. plus the BTS mirrors the sound of OB, where there are so many flaws from the takes that ended up on the final mixing of the songs, to embrace imperfections to heal and grow. Here, it’s like she explains, there’s the persona and there’s the real woman. And it ties with the complex image of the Candy Necklace, that I see as an empty or ephemeral promess (unlike diamonds that are supposed to be forever). urgh her mind!!!! i didn’t care for a big MV for this era…I take back my words, this is perfect.

I don't know about failing the intelligence test.. I love the video but obviously there are going to be people who prefer a more professional, intentional, and well done video. It's not acknowledging the truth imo to pretend like anyone who doesn't like it doesn't get it. People can get it and have critiques But for me personally.. lala ate down and anyone who doesn't like it should re consider Lana's art and where she is right now, she's over all that (at this specific moment in time).... and also you guys should consider that you're literally proving the point of the music video.. that you guys want the movie version of her (the pretty film footage) and not the real version of her (the behind the scenes footage)

White fire, cinnamon on my teeth And I'm sittin' at the stoplight northern town I feel lucky I drive somewhere out of range, I don't know where White noise coming out of my brain Turns off for nothing the fact that I only just now clocked that her 'driving somewhere out of range' is radio range and the white noise is the sound of a radio going out of tune because she's too far away from home to pick up the signal of her favourite radio station. Like, It's Lana, feeling lucky because she's moving from her home town to LA or somewhere similar and being unable to turn off that radio static because then that means she's alone with her own silence and thoughts.

Anybody remember that seemingly fake Reddit post where the poster's BF apparently worked for Lana's tour team during the UV tour. The post said earlier in her career she would often be cloaked up and shuffled into the back of shady private events that gave her anxiety etc and that's where some of her 'problems' originated from... It's very similar to what was portrayed in the music video

I think it does, especially that in the MV she's shown wearing pearls and diamonds necklaces, that she refers as "candy', diamonds and pearl represent the money, fame and stardom in particular during Monroe era. She doesn't care about that fame anymore it's futile to her, she's oppressed by it (White noise coming out of my brain) Just like in 13 beaches she personifies fame as a lover (Sittin' on the sofa, feelin' super suicidal Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible I do Feel like it's you, the one who's bringing me down Thought that we were cool and we were kickin' it like Tribe Called Quest You the best, but, baby, you've been bringing me down I can see it now ) What she was once obsessed with (BTD era, hence the hairstyle reference) is now something killing her. Yes, it's not the only reference but a main inspiration I think, throughout the album, it's a retrospective on her carrer, this tunnel under ocean blvd. All the tracks discuss this internal dialogue. She's questioning what's important to her, should she continue down that road (fame and stardom) ? What's her legacy ? Does she need to concentrate on more important things ? (family, god)... Referencing old Hollywood stardom is not new to her but this time she's putting it into perspective (hence showing the BTS), it's not that glamorous to her anymore (that's why I'm not surprised by the MV as it pretty much reflects perfectly the themes she put out on the record.)

I agree with this. I much prefer 1-2 professional videos now than 5 homemade videos. I love her pre-2016 homemade videos with all my heart, but she doesn't quite do them like before. We really, really needed this Candy Necklace video. Thank you Lana and Rich

I just rewatched it after work and wowwwww. I think this is easily my fav mv since chemtrails. Its dark, even for lana, but it is done so tastefully and each time i watch i see the artistic vision more and more. I have a theory that maybe the two men represent lanas directions in the music industry. The older man seems like he could be playing a producer, someone who offers a lot of fame but is looking to take advantage of it. Jon’s character represents the artistry behind the music. The artistry is where shes happy, but she knows what is expected of the art she produces. In the end, we see her without either of them and i think that represents her choosing herself first, because if she does that she doesn't have to lose herself or her artistry. I could keep going i have so many thoughts😭😭😭

the new music video is awkward and uncomfortable as fuck, her music went to complete shit in 2021 after future starts now, her lyrics have absolutely no depth or charisma whatsoever, her label has no clue what to do with her, her outfits are always questionable, and she works with the most disgusting people in the industry in a pathetic attempt to boost her fame when in reality the bunhead era will always be her most likable and i doubt she’ll ever be able to top it because she completely sold out for notoriety

A thing that confuses me a lot is when people insist that Lana had a persona in the start of her career. I think that she never had a persona to begin with. She was always herself and she chose clothing , certain aesthetics and hairstyles to just perfect her vision. All of these aspects are part of being a visionary and an artist. Her ability to combine her craft with visuals so masterfully is what made her stand out among other artists of her generation. Admitting she had a persona is like doubting a part of her artistic vision imo. CN'S mv made me think of that even more. She was always true to herself even when people believed the opposite, even when people called her superficial for just choosing a specific way to portray her art.
