I’m currently making a writing/recording timeline for Honeymoon! if anyone comes across any information please let me know. This is what I have so far March 2014 - Sessions for Ultraviolence end May-June, 2014: In an interview for Complex magazine, Lana notes: "I actually started conceptually thinking about having a supplement, an addition to this record ('Ultraviolence') that could come very easily. That hasn't happened in a very long time. Not since I wrote the "Paradise" to "Born to Die" that I really liked". Thus, it is likely that Lana's fourth project originally started as an accompanying ep to "Ultraviolence", which probably would have consisted of "Ultraviolence" outtakes and some new songs that were recorded in June-July 2014. But by September 2014, it was clear that the project would develop more, when the first sessions for "Honeymoon" started. June 2014 - She records Music To Watch Boys To (Also titled Pink Flamingos) Interviewer: Are You Going To Record Something Tonight? Do You Know What It Is, Or? Lana: I do, yes I do, I have an idea for a record called 'Music to Watch Boys To', so, yeah, I'm just thinking about it and what it will mean Lana began writing music for the soundtrack to "Big Eyes," which includes: 1. An “I Can Fly” rework 2. “Big Eyes." 3. “Beautiful People” 4. “The Good Life” Cover. June 2014: She records Beautiful People (Demo 1) July 30, 2014: She records her cover of “The Good Life” August 2014 - A demo of Big Eyes is recorded September 14, 2014 - Sessions for the album begin Sep/November: She records Salvatore/Soft Ice Cream and Swan Song? (They were both recorded at Electric Lady Studios and she was seen on New York on those months) Sep-Dec 2014: Dark City, Crazy For You, California, Black Magic Stars, Honeymoon, 24/24 Hours, Dead To Me, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, Freak/Freak Like Me, The Balckest Day and a reworked version of I Can Fly are recorded Fun Fact: 24 was originally recorded for the movie Spectre, but was ultimately rejected Latter half of 2014: A new version of Say Yes To Heaven produced by STINT is made, but was scrapped by being "too overwhelming" Initially, "Honeymoon" developed more as a pop record, with a return to the "Born to Die" sound. This is indicated by several facts, namely the leaked demos of the tracks "The Blackest Day" and "Freak" (made by the same producer, STINT [Ajay Bhattacharyya]), further, in an October interview for "L'Uomo Vogue," Lana expressed her desire to work with producer Giorgio Moroder, who is considered the father of synth disco and electronic dance music, also one of the mixer/engineers said that the "Honeymoon" demos sounded like the 80s. At the same time, Lana was still searching for a sound: "I'm still looking for something different, with majestic choruses, beautiful orchestrations, '50s-inspired with a little touch of soft grunge." And at some point in the making of the album in 2014, Lana told Rick Nowels, one of the album's two producers, that she wanted to make a jazz album. That's how the tracks "Honeymoon" and "Terrence Loves You" came about, which Rick says are not pure jazz, but her "versions" of jazz tracks (the original title of "Terrence Loves You" was "Jazz and Blues ") She also had this to say on the early process of making the record “I wrote the biggest part of the record during fall, winter and spring, and it was a beautiful process because I did it with one of my best friends, Rick. My daily activities consisted on swimming on the beach and writing. The album started very easily and fun with songs like Music to Watch Boys To, Honeymoon and Terrence Loves You, and finally, it went through more modern and sexy songs like Freak and Art Deco. But the line that goes through the record has a lot of jazz influence.” Early 2015: Demos of “Say Yes To Heaven” produced by Stephen Kozmeniuk and Tom Neville are made for the album because of a potential Hugo Boss campaign. Ultimately the song was dropped from Honeymoon because of the campaign and neither version of the song was approved by Hugo Boss. January 6 2015: She says she has written 9 songs, “four of which “the production is perfect; I’m looking for a few more songs to tie everything together” and I’m doing a cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” She also reveals the tile of the album January 13, 2015: Lana records Paradise Jan-Feb 2015: Art Deco, Burnt Norton, Terrence Loves You, Come With Me, If I Die Young, Religion, God Knows I Tried/God Knows are recorded January 28: She is seen entering a recording studio with Mr. Brainwash Jan - February 2015: Lana writes “High By The Beach”, “This was probably one of the last ones on the record” Sometime in 2015: Lana sends a list of songs that need additional production, they were Crazy For You Freak High By The Beach/Get High God Knows I Tried/God Knows Honeymoon Salvatore/Ice Cream Music To Watch Boys To/Pink Flamingos Religion Say Yes To Heaven Swan Song This means that Crazy For You and Say Yes To Heaven were serious contenders for the album February 16, 2015: Lana says to a fan that she was done with Honeymoon March 31, 2015: On an interview with Mark Ronson he states “I’m going to do some recording with Lana Del Rey today and tomorrow. I found this cool old studio out here.” “She has some songs and I said I had some demo ideas, and if they are any good, then maybe she’ll like them and we’ll go from there.” Later in a Reddit AMA he said “we did an early version of Terrence Loves You which i still love.” June 24, 2015 - She posts a photo on honeymoon with the caption “So tired in the studio” June 2015: She records Cry Kill Die and all additional songs are completed In an interview, Lana revealed that she had written about sixteen songs for "Honeymoon," which turned out to be: - "Honeymoon"; - "Music to Watch Boys To"; - "Terrence Loves You." - "God Knows I Tried"; - "High by the Beach” - "Freak"; - "Art Deco." - "Religion." - "Salvatore." - "The Blackes Day"; - "24"; - "Sawn Song." - "California" - "Crazy for You” - "Paradise" - "Come with Me" - "Dead to Me". - "If I Die Young" - “Cry Kill Die” - “Black Magic Stars” September 2015: She records the first demo of “Lust For Life” September 18, 2015: Honeymoon comes out Somewhere in 2015: She records Gucci

Hello Lanaboards Community! Today I would like to introduce you to a band that I think is absolutely worth listening to: Slowdive. This British rock band was formed in Reading, Berkshire in 1989 and consists of Rachel Goswell (vocals and guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals and guitar), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass) and Simon Scott (drums). Slowdive is known for their unique dream-pop and shoegaze sound, which enjoyed great popularity in the 1990s. The band has released four studio albums, three compilation albums, five EPs, five singles and four music videos. Their debut album "Just for a Day" was released in 1991. Although it initially received mixed reviews, their second album "Souvlaki" is now considered one of the best albums of the 1990s and one of the greatest shoegaze albums of all time. Slowdive disbanded in 1995, but reunited in 2014 and performed at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. Since then they have been active and released their self-titled album "Slowdive" in 2017. Their sound is characterized by atmospheric harmonies, psychedelic guitar layers and ambient production. Influences range from folk rock to dub to ambient techno. The band members themselves name bands like Sonic Youth, Can, The Byrds and My Bloody Valentine as sources of inspiration. Since we are all Lana Del Rey fans, I thought Slowdive might be an interesting addition to our musical discussions. You might like her dreamy sounds and fascinating melodies if you like Lana Del Rey's atmospheric songs. Recorded September 2017, after LFL It really depends how the individual would define a "witchy" sound, but the original vision she had in mind was definitely seemed more conceptual with space/cosmic undertones and 80s lynchian inspiration including a large atmosphere. I feel like this can really be seen in the Love music video, LFL trailer and songs like Beautiful People (Demo 2), 13 Beaches, Lust For Life (demo 1-3), Groupie Love (demo), Poetry In Motion, If I Die Young (counting it), Serene Queen, and Get Free which all have super clear elements of this cosmic sound. Somewhere along the process she became more inspired by woodstock hippie culture and wanted to incorprate beats and I feel like that's where it really changed. I do think that the idea of the original album having these tracks on it with this sound is a myth however... seemed a lot more like a idea that was being worked on then later combined with more elements she took inspo from ex. woodstock and politics. That's just my theory at least.

She must truly love "I Can Fly", if she considered for both "Honeymoon" (2015) and "Blue Banisters" (2021), even AFTER she already released it for the "Big Eyes" soundtrack.

This is so interesting. And I thought about how the last song she recorded to the album was High By The Beach, which is the most hip hop influenced song on the album, which also makes me think of lust for life, which is one of her albums that have the most hip hop influences. So in this case the last song she recorded hinted at the next albums sound. Does this also apply to ocean boulevard and LDRX? Also Violet Sings The Blues is one of the most gorgeous song titles I’ve ever heard. But I love Terrence Loves You too.

I always found the name "Terrence Loves You" really intriguing, but "Violet Sings the Blues" is just... wow.

Lana songs aren't really that scary for me but if there's a song (and video) that has creepy vibes then it's probably the 2007 live version of Brite Lites. The loud horror-like guitar and the red low quality video makes it look like it's from the dark web which went viral in the late 2000s and people started making creepypastas of it. Not gonna lie, I love it actually, even if the guitar sounds weird

Ok, let me handle it. I'm certain that my following unoopular opinion/theory is (very) controversial AND LONG! The so-called "witchy dreamy spacey cosmic folky psychedelic ambient" original concept is a myth. I don't think that the "witchiness" was even the goal for the album. I have also thought that Lana wasn't really certain either what she wanted for the album. Once in 2015 she talked about her thoughts on the new album "like a New York record, less dreamy and more upbeat". Then in 2016 (at the Pre-Grammy Gala?) she said that the upcoming album will have a similar aesthetic with Honeymoon, although in February 2017 Insta livestream she said that LFL will have a retro-futuristic aesthetic. But the album has also Woodstock/1960s-70s hippie aesthetics which are also seen on the album cover which was shot already in June/July 2016 (the hippie-peace inspired looks were also seen in the Festival Tour 2016). Also at first she made some Shangri-Las inspired songs, then after Donald Trump's victory in November 2016, she started to make more politically oriented songs. Also to think that in 2016 she made electro-pop version of Say Yes To Heaven. Then she also was in relationship with G-Eazy in Spring 2017 which in result she started to make more songs. In an interview with a radio in early 2017, she (and later in an another interview Rick Nowels) also said that the album will be mix of everything, that will have different genres. It's either two options: • she was unsure what to do with the album • it was intentional and I believe this theory more, because you can see that the album's sound has mix from the sound of her old eras (baroque pop, dream pop, hip-hop, trap, trip hop) and the sound of her upcoming/newer sound (folk, acoustic ballads, folktronica, Americana) which are seen in NFR, COTCC and so on. The collaborations were 100% intentional because Abel and Rocky were important people in the start of her breakthrough and Nicks/Lennon are kind of her idols, so she wanted to show people where is she heading to. That's why she later dedicated to the fans because she was saying goodbye to her "old-self", her old sound. I feel like that was kind of her point the whole time.

as for 2021, we only know that she broke up with clay around july and started seeing mike hermosa in august. eventually they broke up by the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022 because lana and jack met on february 13th 2022 (super bowl sunday) and have dated until august/september (she was seen with evan around this time). then my post that i linked explains the rest. hope this helps! EDIT: also her and jack have been dating again since the end of april/beginning of may because mid april she was seen with evan at high water festival, then never seen with him again. lana was at jack’s birthday gathering (may 19th) and he was with her in brazil (from the 25th of may and onwards until they left brazil). recently (sunday june 11th or monday june 12th) somebody spotted them at bloomingsdale in century city, so they’re still together.

I find the timeline between HM and LFL even more interesting than the post BTD stuff (probably cause we already know almost everything about it at this point) so I'll do a little summary about what I remember and think about it. I love an essay sorry The LFL demo (and some other songs + outtakes), the Neil photoshoot and the album trailer all pointed to a dark and witchy aesthetic and sound. But then the Rich MVs and some details of the songs (like 13 Beaches) had those futuristic and space-y/glitchy tones too, which in my opinion could happily coexist and match (the moon being like the nexus for example) What I also find weird is that she teased the album collabs on the trailer so that aspect of the record was integrated into the original aesthetic, even though the collabs are the songs that are further from the original dark tone Then there's the political outtakes and the girl group tracks which weren't scrapped entirely since there's some elements of that on the final album. What's clear is that she had a pretty sudden artistic switch towards the end of the album process cause Coachella and specially Change were in my opinion the songs that marked the transition between pre and post NFR Lana in terms of writing... at that point she didn't have any track as straightforward and with that lyrical style. LFL is truly THE transition album, not only in terms of sound/lyrics but also for her creative process. She had a lot of style and concept switches at the time but instead of scrapping the whole thing (like she did with the post BTD/Tropico/early UV tracks) she kept adding and doing little changes and I feel that's how she works now. Instead of having a clear concept as a whole she just writes and then tries to put together an album that makes sense in a way with what she has. Chemtrails was a bit of an exception cause it's really cohesive but it started as a collection of simpler songs she knew she wanted to use in the future but didn't match at all the Norman sound so yeah she still has a somewhat clear direction in that aspect but it's not as conceptualized as it used to be (which is not a bad thing tho, all the past 3/4 albums are still great and contain some of her absolute best tracks).

Just like "«Tropico» discussion thread", I wanted to create a separate thread for a discussion and systematization of Lana's fifth studio album's sessions, that would later become "Lust for Life". Here's a timeline of sessions' development based on facts we know of (if I'm wrong anywhere let me know): This all gives us an approximate timeline of tracklist's changes: 1. After a political climate change; 2. After the leak of "Best American Record"; 3. After Lana axed 3 tracks, making from 18 tracks 15 tracks, to which "Change" will later be added as 16th track. And here are all sessions from June 2015 - June 2017 that we know of so far: 1. "Serene Queen" (the song was made in one day, is a rough demo that was made on earliest "Lust for Life" sessions and was never come back to again); 2. "Best American Record"; 3. "Yosemite"; 4. "Sugary Sweet" (acapella 30-seconds idea; snippet leaked); 5. "Cry Kill Die" (snippet leaked); 6. "Roses Bloom for You" (originally planned to be an "intro" to the album; most likely, the one-minute audio that Lana shared via Instagram is the entire track); 7. "Everything I Do" (snippet leaked); 8. "Poetry in Motion" (snippet leaked); 9. Unknown Song (snippet: "When you call..."); 10. "Say Yes to Heaven" ("Honeymoon" Version; this version firstly was in consideration for a fifth studio album, but later was reworked); 11. "Say Yes to Heaven" (Fred Gibson 2016 Version); 12. "Fine China" (2016 Version); 13. "Silverlake"; 14. "LA Who Am I to Love You"; 15. "Malibu"; 16-19. 4 political outtakes (Lana shared in an interview); 20-22. 4 songs sent to A$AP Rocky for a collaboration (one of them was "Groupie Love"); 23-24. 4 unknown songs "left on the cutting room floor" (2 of the songs are presumably "Yosemite" and "Best American Record"); 25-... Other "amazing outtakes from 2016"; songs, meant to be on a follow-up album, that consisted out of outtakes from "Lust for Life" sessions. Alleged tracks: 1. "California" (A "Honeymoon" outtake, insider reported that Lana loved the song and, allegedly, tried to release it on further albums, tried to even make it a single, but this wasn't confirmed); 2. "Wild One" (In 2015, Justin Parker made minimal changes to the original 2012 track "Mike," renamed it "Wild One" and registered with the original version of "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems." But this was done, supposedly, without any purpose, so the track is not an outtake from either "Honeymoon" or "Lust for Life". However, "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems" was later released on "Lust for Life");

Definitely under 100 because BOZ said that Lana never created over 100 songs during an era but LFL era sessions have the biggest amount of songs though. I realised that we need Mighty Mike outtakes because he was the additional producer for 13 Beaches and Heroin!

That’s what I thought as well. From the beginning I’m quiet sure there isn’t really an aesthetic/environment pinpointing towards a witchy approach among the record. Moreover simply- retrofuturistic. But I do believe the songs started to be more grounded and peaceful in nature story/lyric wise (once again- not the sound)

I don't know if any of you care about this or have seen this but I think it's a fitting thread to post this. It's the composite screen of Lust For Life title track with its 129 mixes/stems. Her mixers Kieron Menzies and Dean Reid shared this photo in an interview where they discussed about LFL album in general.
