16 likesJust like "«Tropico» discussion thread", I wanted to create a separate thread for a discussion and systematization of Lana's fifth studio album's sessions, that would later become "Lust for Life". Here's a timeline of sessions' development based on facts we know of (if I'm wrong anywhere let me know): This all gives us an approximate timeline of tracklist's changes: 1. After a political climate change; 2. After the leak of "Best American Record"; 3. After Lana axed 3 tracks, making from 18 tracks 15 tracks, to which "Change" will later be added as 16th track. And here are all sessions from June 2015 - June 2017 that we know of so far: 1. "Serene Queen" (the song was made in one day, is a rough demo that was made on earliest "Lust for Life" sessions and was never come back to again); 2. "Best American Record"; 3. "Yosemite"; 4. "Sugary Sweet" (acapella 30-seconds idea; snippet leaked); 5. "Cry Kill Die" (snippet leaked); 6. "Roses Bloom for You" (originally planned to be an "intro" to the album; most likely, the one-minute audio that Lana shared via Instagram is the entire track); 7. "Everything I Do" (snippet leaked); 8. "Poetry in Motion" (snippet leaked); 9. Unknown Song (snippet: "When you call..."); 10. "Say Yes to Heaven" ("Honeymoon" Version; this version firstly was in consideration for a fifth studio album, but later was reworked); 11. "Say Yes to Heaven" (Fred Gibson 2016 Version); 12. "Fine China" (2016 Version); 13. "Silverlake"; 14. "LA Who Am I to Love You"; 15. "Malibu"; 16-19. 4 political outtakes (Lana shared in an interview); 20-22. 4 songs sent to A$AP Rocky for a collaboration (one of them was "Groupie Love"); 23-24. 4 unknown songs "left on the cutting room floor" (2 of the songs are presumably "Yosemite" and "Best American Record"); 25-... Other "amazing outtakes from 2016"; songs, meant to be on a follow-up album, that consisted out of outtakes from "Lust for Life" sessions. Alleged tracks: 1. "California" (A "Honeymoon" outtake, insider reported that Lana loved the song and, allegedly, tried to release it on further albums, tried to even make it a single, but this wasn't confirmed); 2. "Wild One" (In 2015, Justin Parker made minimal changes to the original 2012 track "Mike," renamed it "Wild One" and registered with the original version of "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems." But this was done, supposedly, without any purpose, so the track is not an outtake from either "Honeymoon" or "Lust for Life". However, "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems" was later released on "Lust for Life");

13 likesI find the timeline between HM and LFL even more interesting than the post BTD stuff (probably cause we already know almost everything about it at this point) so I'll do a little summary about what I remember and think about it. I love an essay sorry The LFL demo (and some other songs + outtakes), the Neil photoshoot and the album trailer all pointed to a dark and witchy aesthetic and sound. But then the Rich MVs and some details of the songs (like 13 Beaches) had those futuristic and space-y/glitchy tones too, which in my opinion could happily coexist and match (the moon being like the nexus for example) What I also find weird is that she teased the album collabs on the trailer so that aspect of the record was integrated into the original aesthetic, even though the collabs are the songs that are further from the original dark tone Then there's the political outtakes and the girl group tracks which weren't scrapped entirely since there's some elements of that on the final album. What's clear is that she had a pretty sudden artistic switch towards the end of the album process cause Coachella and specially Change were in my opinion the songs that marked the transition between pre and post NFR Lana in terms of writing... at that point she didn't have any track as straightforward and with that lyrical style. LFL is truly THE transition album, not only in terms of sound/lyrics but also for her creative process. She had a lot of style and concept switches at the time but instead of scrapping the whole thing (like she did with the post BTD/Tropico/early UV tracks) she kept adding and doing little changes and I feel that's how she works now. Instead of having a clear concept as a whole she just writes and then tries to put together an album that makes sense in a way with what she has. Chemtrails was a bit of an exception cause it's really cohesive but it started as a collection of simpler songs she knew she wanted to use in the future but didn't match at all the Norman sound so yeah she still has a somewhat clear direction in that aspect but it's not as conceptualized as it used to be (which is not a bad thing tho, all the past 3/4 albums are still great and contain some of her absolute best tracks).

12 likesLFL is one interesting era indeed. I wouldn’t change the album at all, as « imperfect » as it is (I don’t mind the different genres of it, but some songs could have benefited a bit more polishing with the trap beats, like Coachella and In My Feelings; they kinda clash with the tracks that have very pristine production), it reflected the state of the US in 2017 and my personal state of mind. I love how the outtakes bring us closer to the witchy, folky, spacey Lana that I love so much. And as much as I love that initial concept, I’m not so sure we would have loved LFL as much as we say we would; I think a lot of people would have called it « Honeymoon snore fest 2.0 » (yes, this is how HM was perceived back then). anyways, I want Cry Kill Die!

7 likesThis album is so interesting because it was really the first time she strayed away from her normal album formula (14-15 tracks all within a similar style with no features and usually including a cover). She tried so many different styles and added features, so I would love to know what this albums tracklist looked like during early sessions

7 likesThe "bombastic" outtakes he's referring to are not the Shangri-Las style outtakes (those are for LFL, Lana was originally super inspired by the Shangri-Las and their harmonies and wanted the album to have sort of a retro girl group sound - with the political climate shift she felt she had to change a lot of the songs up but that was a big part of her original intention for the record)

6 likesLately I had a theory, that between August 2015-March 2016, Lana wanted to do a deluxe or some kind of a special version (similar to Paradise) for Honeymoon. I know that Honeymoon was a vanity project but that kind of explains why she was making random songs during Summer/Autumn 2015 like Serene Queen or Cry Kill Die. She wanted to do a special version for Ultraviolence too and it later was formed as Honeymoon. I think Lust For Life album we know as today was formed after the end of her Festival Tour in August 2016/September 2016. Because I remember something that she recorded LFL with Abel in September 2016 (because he had a new haircut or something + they had recorded Stargirl and Party Monster in 2016 too).

Unpopular Lana Opinions

I really like Judah Interlude the instrumentals are crazy and it matches A&W and Candy Necklace atmosphere. This is the real Patty and Sean dissctrack on this record but I feel like y'all sleep on it. Why are you so infatuated with me? Gives me damn chills every damn time, her distanced laughter, the gloomy sounds..it is very haunting. -

5 likesIf you really want it, get it.. I started collecting and now just 4 records away from being a collection I see as being complete to the lesser standard.. before I start differentiating between first press, second press and the pic disk singles so I got a whole load of vinyl collecting dust too because I also don’t own a record player because I want a good one to play these records on.. and a good record player is too pricey right now

4 likesI've beeeeen waiting for this discussion I'd really love to know more about the album trailer itself. We got the witchy and retrofuturism aesthetics, with some hints of a political theme. I just don't think that the album itself really corresponded to what was hinted at in the trailer. Anyone got any further information on it?

4 likesKintsugi and Fingertips haters make me even madder when you take into account that these two songs are very personal, transparent and honest. During COCC she made a video talking about how she wasn't going to let people tell her story for her, that the popular narratives were fictitious, and the real story was more beautiful than what they say. Fingertips is the result of this. Talking about it all: her siblings, being sent away, resenting her mother, wanting a child, suicide, death/loss of a partner.....I mean, she covered so many bases. As a long time fan I'm very moved by it. Like, sure a lot of this stuff we've known or has been inferred....but it's different when she actually sings about it It's storytelling, it's songwriting, it's poetry. Those just here for "bops" and "cinematic production" or whatever it is they're not getting....you're just not gonna appreciate or understand the true magnificence of the songs if you don't genuinely love Lana's writing and story. I love hearing her sing about this shit, it feels really personal and touching and I feel every word, it's truly music for the soul. Idk how some people cant see how BIG these two songs are for her. They're so important. But thats just me

4 likesWhen Coachella was released, I loved it so much (I still love it, one of my favorites, I'm probably the only fan of the song) and the whole time I listened to the song, there were like hate comments everywhere. I do find the song kind of "unusual" but it doesn't mean it's bad. I'd like to add some strings to the song though

4 likesYeah I agree, I think if it had the "alleged" slow sound like the LFL demo and such, it would've had lukewarm reception like COTCC had (although I adore COTCC and it didn't deserve the hate) from the fans and GP. (Although when LFL album was released its reception was great from fans and GP until it started receiving hate from fans in 2018?) My unpopular opinion is that the Lust For Life album we have, is flawless and perfect but that's of course matter of taste and choices. Without the so-called changes and the final product of the current Lust For Life, we definitely wouldn't have NFR and all the albums what followed it.

4 likesabsolutely, the shift after november 2016 was so obvious and tracks made in 2017 are very different for lust for life as much as for her style overall, i was thinking that there was no OG album and that her creative process just kept updating, but the change in sound is too obvious and her 2017 songs are almost from the same aesthetics and couldve been easily existed as a part of another separate project, its very interesting lana didnt divide and mixed original songs with 2017 songs, and i agree the latest made songs are a step towards something something new! also what are these girl group tracks? did u mean The Shangri-Las?
